Caps just did what the Penguins did, giving out all those extensions to Crosby, Malkin and Letang and cripping their cap space. Caps gave them out to Kuznetsov, Oshie, Backstrom, et al but two of those guys literally cannot play anymore. Put on LTIR, Caps had more space to sign guys like Chychrun and Thompson to long term deals

Be curious how they go moving forward

Legit wouldn’t want him back for free even if his cap hit was half what it is.

Like, the Red Wings were built on an old ass foundation of Zetterberg and Datsuyk and once they retired nobody ever stepped up and did anything, just like the Penguins are built on Crosby, Letang and Malkin and once they retire nobody is going to step up and do anything and the Penguins are going to go into a 20 year rebuild.

At least the Caps tried to get younger and have a FO willing to take chances on PLD / Strome et al

Ovechkin is probably playing his last year and then going off to Russia but hopefully the team can fill in some talent. But that's gonna be a huge loss
