Chapter 29: The Fight That Never Was

John Price had been surveying the party, taking in the glamorous Forrester Creations scene, when he suddenly spotted himCanelo Álvarez.

The undisputed super middleweight champion stood near the grand piano, looking sharp in a tailored navy blue suit, sipping a tequila neat. Price nudged Juan.

“Is that Canelo?”

Juan’s eyes widened. “Oh, it definitely is.”

Brenda turned, immediately intrigued. “Wait—Canelo’s here? The guy that’s been dodging Jake Paul?”

Before Price could stop her, Brenda had already marched across the room.

Sami Brady was already mid-conversation with the champ.

“You know,” Sami was saying, arms crossed, “a lot of people think you’re dodging Jake Paul.”

Canelo laughed—a deep, amused chuckle. “Dodging? Come on.” He shook his head, taking another sip of tequila. “That fight was never serious.”

Sami smirked. “Yeah? Because from where I’m standing, you were challenged publicly, and instead of taking the fight, you went to Saudi Arabia.”

Canelo raised an eyebrow. “Because they paid more. A lot more.”

Brenda stepped into the conversation, nodding. “Yeah, yeah, Saudi Arabia pays top dollar, but come on—Canelo vs. Jake Paul would’ve been a spectacle.

Canelo sighed, shaking his head. “Be serious.”

Juan, standing next to Brenda, chuckled. “She’s right, though. That fight would’ve made insane money. You know it. We know it. And Jake Paul knows it.

Canelo scoffed, waving a hand. “Jake Paul is not a real boxer.”

Sami rolled her eyes. “And yet, you took Rocky Fielding seriously.”

Brenda laughed. “Yeah, Canelo, what’s up with that?”

Juan grinned. “I mean, I get it. Jake’s not exactly elite, but he’s got power. He could’ve made it interesting.”

Canelo shook his head, smirking slightly. “You all must be joking.”

Brenda shrugged. “I don’t know, champ—Jake’s got the hype. If Tommy Fury could go the distance with him, don’t you think you should’ve just ended the speculation and knocked him out?”

Canelo chuckled. “I don’t need to. He knows the truth.”

Sami, unimpressed, shrugged. “All I hear are excuses.

Canelo gave her a look but said nothing.

Price, watching the whole thing, finally intervened. “Alright, alright—let’s not pressure the champ.” He turned to Canelo. “But just so we’re clear… you would’ve knocked him out in what—two rounds?”

Canelo grinned. “One.”

Juan laughed. “Now that’s a fight we would’ve paid to see.”

Brenda sighed. “Guess we’ll never know.”

Sami raised an eyebrow. “Unless… Canelo changes his mind.

Canelo shook his head. “Not happening.”

Brenda grinned. “That’s what Mayweather said about fighting Logan Paul.

Canelo rolled his eyes and took another sip of his tequila, while the debate continued, much to his amusement.

f***ing idiot ass teammates who don't know how to play Rivals dragging me down

it's like the opposite of getting boosted lol

ESPN is a big name but yeah they have been mismanaged for years misadvertising their properties. You're right they own the NHL and haven't done shit with it. Wow, we have a 30 minute preview show every day now! Who cares.

My interest in the NHL has gone down since they went to ESPN. I miss NBC. Like the NHL, I'm going to strictly stick to OG because I literally have to pay more to watch more of the league.

"Get a job, pay for ESPN+"

But ESPN+ is a shitty product

Cleveland's success last season wasn't particularly sustainable long term. Their offence was overall pretty mediocre but they had a tendancy to cluster their hits together. Their bullpen was heavily relied on and that worked for them last season, but bullpens are volatile. Last season was effectively a "What happens if everything goes right" scenario for them despite their injuries early on.

They traded Naylor and Gimenez for players who are unproven at the major league level and Luis Ortiz; who had iffy peripheral numbers despite a good 2024. Their success this year will likely rely on prospects like Bazzana beating expectations and Carlos Santana defying father time, both things that projection systems are blind to.

Anyone saying they miss NBC is a dirty liar.

NBC never went out of their way to promote the NHL, they only ever did the bare minimum.

How long did they employ known hockey terrorist Mike Milbury for intermission analysis?

NBC did a better job than ESPN. The only reason people didn't like NBC was Pierre.

"NBC never went out of their way to promote the NHL"

and ESPN doesn't either

Milbury was a prick and moron that exemplified how little they cared about hockey, like anyone wants to hear from some fossil best known for beating a fan with a shoe and then destroying the Islanders as a GM.

I'm not defending ESPN, but NBC f***ing sucked.

They changed the schedule the Stanley Cup Finals so Conan could premier on the f***ing Tonight Show. They did not care about hockey.

NBC was memorable mostly for Doc

the new ESPN commentators suck and those are the ones they don't hide on ESPN+

I'll forgo listening to Doc Emerick if it means we don't have to also endure the notorious Pittsburgh and Chicago homer Eddie Olczyk and the obnoxious clown Pierre Maguire.
