I've changed my mind. Originally I was for a ceremony at the start of Detroit's season with a moment of silence and either a patch on their helmet or Jersey for the year as my answer.

But now I want the NHL to change to the GHL. Only Gordie Howe's are allowed to play and they must all wear number 9. For that matter only Gordie Howe's are allowed to watch as well. In my ideal world it is basically Gordie Howe inception. Or Being John Malcovich.

The solution is simple.
Let players use "8+1" instead of a plain 9.

It's been done before in soccer. Just google Ivan Zamorano 8 + 1.
