There are RULES how you can make CONTACT with an opposing player.

There is a line for offside in football, dictated by the position of the last defender. Given the differences in game speed/player movement it's a perfectly sensible system when viewing the two sports together and separately. I'm not sure what else you could do to prevent a team from leaving a man at the opposite end of the pitch to receive long passes all game long.

Back in my soccerball playing days, when we first started playing full-size pitch at under 12s level, we played against our local rivals in the first game of the season and all their coach was interested in was getting his back 4 to hold the offside line, instead of, you know, actually playing soccerball and defending against our players when we were running towards them with the ball.

We beat them like 12-0 and I was in goal doing nothing while freezing my arse off in the Welsh weather
