"That last season was so bad it poisoned the whole show. Not even being dramatic. Both my wife and aunt watched it constantly in the background or to fill time. They stopped after season 8.

I guess you could say s8 was a metaphorical red wedding for the series in general. After it people just lost interest. It ruined the legacy of what was a good series.
