Mortal Kombat only became popular because the over-the-top blood and gore was a novel idea in the 90s and it only gained more popularity from the efforts to censor it.

They are too basic to be great fighting games, but they attract the casuals with a unique cast and memorable finishers.

I think Street Fighter is a pretty basic fighting game, but it's still miles ahead of MK in terms of complexity.

Either way, it's understandable why MK gets adapted more often than all of the other less-exciting fighting series
