It's kinda impressive how much they bungled it. They went from being a pop culture phenomenon to being a punchline.

So many storylines with unsatisfying or nonsensical conclusions because the show runners wanted to subvert expectations.

They subverted expectations just for the sake of it for things that actually mattered, but at the same time there was also a shit ton of fan-servicey pandering alongside that. Season 8 had a horrendous amount of callbacks and re-used lines that became t-shirt slogans from Season 1.

They at least could have made the subversion of expectations make sense if everything hadn't been so rushed. I mean, if you look at it with your book reader hat on you can see how it would not be that outlandish for George to write it so that Bran becomes king in the end, but they just made him a complete personality-less non-entity in the latter half of the show and then when Tyrion suggest that he should be king it's just like... but why????
