Also, this movie was showing Superman as an untested hero who was still wrapping his mind around the limits of his powers and the moral implications of what he can do. He isn't the seasoned Superman of the comics and earlier incarnations who just 'gets it right' out of years of practice; he's still easing his way into the role.
