You're down by 4 on the opposing teams 45. It's 4th and 2 mid way through the 4th quarter.

Analytics: you have a 70% chance of getting a 1st down.

NFL head coach: okay imma punt it anyways.
In this situation punting is fine. Depends on defense quality. Is that factored into this fancy number

In football you have 16 games

In baseball you have 162 games to glean trends and data

Analytics are not that big a factor in football. It's more a baseball thing.

Baseball lends itself more to analytics because of the nature of the game and the large sample sizes.

I haven't watched the NHL in years (and have no desire to watch again) but I would imagine hockey being a more difficult game to provide deterministic analytics for given the constantly fluid/evolving nature of the game and no set plays.

hockey is also more puck luck and random factors which are frequently not accounted for in advanced analytics

Its becoming more in football, though.....especially on when to go for 2 points & in punting situations for some reason. Chucky Gruden said analytics made him go for it on 4th down on his own 35 in the 1st quarter last Sunday

it's not

do not spread "the big lie"

many coaches are on record as saying they don't care for or use it

If you want to use analytics to find players, fine. Belichick does that constantly.

But using analytics in playcalling has mixed results.

"We are down 5. There is 1:20 left on the clock. 4th and 3. What do the analytics say?"

"They say to f***ing go for it. 100%"

"Okay. I didn't need f***ing analytics to know that."

In addition to make matters WORSE @TheGreenTBer @Fixed to Ruin this s ocalled "Analytics Revolution" has led to the proliferation of "fake news" sites like "PFF" which essentially has people f***ing sit in their room, grade players on a numerical scale without ANY basis in ANY statistical metric, then release these grades out without ANY context to teammates or system.

In conclusion f*** Analytics.

In my experience no league other than baseball has done analytics successfully during a game.

That doesn't mean it isn't useful. I never said it wasn't useful. I use analytics every day.

But it's a front office tool (even with the Leafs) for scouting and data driven analysis that provides information which can help correct a player's play

It is rarely used in game time decisions
