The US has been designated as the host for the 2018 World Juniors.

There are currently three cities that have put in bids. Buffalo, Tampa Bay, and Pittsburg.

I think Florida might be a cool location to host it because of all the snowbirds down there. Plenty of Canadians might use it as an opportunity for a Xmas vacation.

Kind of surprised Minnesota never applied to host. I think they would be a perfect location. A hockey state with lots of rinks, a great college hockey tradition, and close to Canada.

I thought it was clear it would be held in Des Moines? Atleast that's what the swedish wikipedia for wjc say. But I guess wiki is not the best source

How do you know that those 3 cities are the only ones who have submitted bids?

I think it will go to Pittsburgh since it was just in Buffalo. Pittsburgh also has the best choice of a second arena, which is mandatory to have for a host city by the IIHF. Pittsburgh could have the second host play in Youngstown's USHL rink, Johnstowns NAHL rink, or Wheeling's ECHL rink. All of those arenas are within an hour drive from Pittsburgh. Tampa Bay would have to go down to Estero, FL and play in the Germain Arena to have their suitable second arena within a reasonable drive (but still 2.5 hours away). I can't see a Tampa/Miami host.

Buffalo just built that hockey complex right in front of the arena with two more rinks. Brand new hotel will be up by then too to go with the other stuff they put there. You wouldn't have to even drive anywhere...just walk right from the hotel to the dressing room to the ice to the restaurant.

I know they just had it...but the near 200 million in building stuff was for a reason.

If they put it in Buffalo then you'll have a whole bunch of Canadians at every game or a packed Canadian house for the Canadian games atleast. Tampa would be different so maybe try Tampa?

Florida would be an interesting experiment but I fear that games featuring teams that aren't Canada/USA wouldn't sell nearly as well in they would in a more traditional hockey market. It sucks watching a great game between say, Finland and Sweden on TV and seeing the arena half empty.

I wouldn't mind Florida. I could actually go see a game in person then.

Florida is at the best possible timezone in USA for Europeans. Go Florida.

Buffalo will get it.

Simply because of the recent growth in the city, and the obvious fact that Canada is just a hop, skip, and jump away.

edit: I wonder why not Detroit. I know the city isn't "booming", but really, neither is Buffalo.

Would Europeans go on vacation to Florida to see the WJCs? That could lead to a pretty cool atmosphere with all the Canadian snowbirds already down there.

Can MN not get it then? We have two premier arenas eight miles away from each other. Winnipeg fans would make the trip, so all Canadian games would be full.

Tampa would be pretty cool but as people say, Buffalo seems logical, but they also had it recently.

Pittsburgh feels kinda meh.

Buffalo would make the most cash for obvious reasons but they just hosted it.

Tampa Bay would get a lot of snowbirds but it would still need locals to buy tickets for the even to be successful.

Pittsburg is a great hockey town but they don't have a college team.

Could Boston handle a tourney like this? Or will all attention be on NFL, NHL?

Well it was an attendance failure back in '96. But that was almost 20 years ago.
Boston is a good college hockey town. I wouldn't mind seeing them get another try at it

Would have liked to have seen Seattle put in a bid with their new arena that they're building.
