Updated line up - Pre Training Camp with taxi squad

  • Xenforo Cloud has upgraded us to version 2.3.6. Please report any issues you experience.
Are we gonna be limited to a 21 man CAP roster and then add a bigger taxi squad to get to 23 max normal roster + up to 6 on taxi squad for a total of 29? or are we gonna be at 21 based on CAP + up to 6 on taxi squad for total of 27?

Anyone know what da rules are gonna be here?

I expect the latter, but I don't know the details yet.

On the plus side Engvall, Robertson, Lehtonen, Sandin and Liljegren are all waiver ineligible, so we can rotate guys in and out easily.

Lots of questions. Will players need to clear waivers if shuttled from the main roster to the taxi squad?

How do we keep Dell as our 3rd goalie so that he can be on the taxi squad?

Min: 20 players on NHL roster (excl. TS)
Max: 23 players on NHL roster (excl. TS)

Min: 4 players on TS
Max: 6 players on TS

Thus:

Min: 24 players on roster + TS
Max: 29 players on roster + TS

taxi squad must contain a goalie. goalie must clear waivers if waivers eligible (i.e., Dell)

I am still wondering about the 3rd goalie.

So Toronto wants Dell to be a 3
Puts him on waivers but he is claimed. Does the claiming team then have to keep him on their big league roster?
And if the claiming team wants Dell to be a taxi guy too they place him on waivers only to be claimed again elsewhere??

Seems to me we will be fortunate enough to have HUTCH as #3 by the time all is said and done.

I think with the Taxi Squad, Dell would most likely be on the main roster.
Pretty sure they will roll with 12 forwards and 6 Dman with 3 goalies and the rest will be on the taxi squad and move in and out of the lineup. As Taxi Squad are with the team, don't see why guys that are waivers exempt would be on the main roster.

Does there HAVE to be a taxi squad goalie, or just 3 goalies between the main roster and taxi squad? Because there is no reason they can't just keep Dell on the main roster and carry 6 players on the taxi squad.

The rule on cap friendly states: 1 goalie required on the taxi squad for teams with less than 3 goalies on the active roster. Which to me means that it will be a 20 man roster with Dell as the 21st player and 6 skaters on the Taxi Squad.

Yea if Dell gets claimed, that team would have to keep him on their NHL roster, just like how waivers work today.

If that team re-waives (which can happen), then I don't know precisely what happens, but it looks something like these 2 options:

a) He continues through the waiver order until he gets to the end. If not claimed, he returns as property of the Leafs and can be assigned to the taxi squad; or
b) He starts the waiver order from the beginning, continues until he gets to the Leafs. If Leafs claim him, then he clears to the Taxi Squad/minors

The point is, that if a player is re-waived within some threshold of time or games played, the system is designed to ensure his rights go back to the team that originally waived him. Not the team that claimed them re-waived.

This is a good point. Better to keep three goalies on the roster.

I thought that originally too ... why risk losing Dell? ... just move taxi squads guys in and out of lineup as needed ... but I thought there would be a special rule for goalers on taxi squad so teams are not swapping taxi squad goalers back and forth

There has to be 3 goalies between NHL roster and TS. NHL roster needs minimum of 2 goalies.

I find it unlikely, especially now that there is a taxi-squad, that the Leafs will be rolling with a 21-man NHL roster, but your guess is as good as mine.

I think the rule is team needs 3 goalies and it is up the team where to put the 3rd goalie. Don't see why the league puts in a rule saying the 3rd goalie needs to be on the taxi squad.

I think guys that can be waiver exempt will on the taxi squad even if they are in the starting lineup, mainly due to cap reason. For example, Robertson might be on the first line but unless it is game day, he will be on the taxi squad to save cap.

They have to with COVID ... you are on a road trip and 1 goaler gets COVID then you need a backup that night ready ... hopefully they iron this one out before season starts

Issue becomes it could get stupid if teams start upgrading their 3rd goaler with COVID and injuries ... you could see a merry go round of 3rd goalers going team to team to team as teams battle to get better ones through waivers with high risk of COVID and injuries in shortened seaosn

Absolutely, every team close to the cap will do this. Run 20 man rosters off-days, accrue for a TDL purchase.

So, this is my assumption as to how the Leafs will operate.

Minimum 20 roster players at all times, plus 6 Taxi Squad.

Leafs will run 11 forwards, 6 D, and 3 goalies. Dell will never be exposed, and we will be well under the cap.

On game day, we will call up one of the forwards, or a D man.... they will get sent back to the Taxi Squad the next day, and allowed to accumulate Cap Space.

Hyman - Matthews - Nylander
Kerfoot - Tavares - Marner
Robertson - Thornton - Mikheyev
Vesey - Spezza - Simmonds
Barabanov/Engvall

Rielly - Brodie
Muzzin - Holl
Dermott - Bogosian
Lehtonen

Dell
20 man roster for ultimate CAP mgmt
save $$$ on 21st roster spot by adding/deleting from taxi squad for late season ADD to help
Bogo/Holl will have some time on injured reserve to give Sandin/Lehtonen some play time
Jumbo/Spezz same thing to get time for Engval

You can't put players on LTIR if not injured, to give other players some games.

If the Leafs had to put Dell on waivers is it a good chance he gets claimed by another team? So it would be like that time they lost Curtis Curtis McElhinney to the Hurricanes and Calvin Pickard to the Flyers. Plus if that happened what are the odds a team like the Capitals wanted to claim Dell since Henrik Lundqvist won't be playing this season.
