I think the main reason he could become available is for cap reasons, a cost controlled return may be preferable. Just spit balling, because we don't know the Habs plans and who they could be targeting (i.e. like Dach last summer).
The Dach trade wil not be replicated. I was looking at players that would fill a need in his draft year and the one following. They would all cost substantially more than Dach who was like Manna from Heaven. The player you mentioned included.

Yup. Whenever someone says a player is untradable because they're too valuable, I like to point out that Gretzky was traded in his prime
Gretzky was sold by an unscrupulous owner who was on the verge of bankruptcy in an era where money could be used as an asset in a transaction, and the league allowed it. That is not at all a precedent for the trading of a superstar player. The Kings paid $15 Million in 1998 (go see what that’s worth today).

It was really a sale. Peter Pocklington sold high on his investment and made himself a boatload of cash in the process. A decade after buying Wayne Gretzky from Nelson Skalbania for the bargain price of $700,000, Pocklington cashed in and sold his prized possession for $15,000,000.

So no, the Gretzky move doesn’t prove what too many have attempted to claim in what has become an overused and baseless cliche.

Listening to the press conference got the impression they could be looking to make some move(s). We shall see.

I can see Mailloux, Kidney and Harris as bait.

Besides players on team (Slaf/Guhle/Wifi), only Hutson is a do not trade for me…Beck is next closest.

Having said that, none of these guys are superstars so it all depends what the return is.

Just Guhle, Hutson and Slaf for me. But lots would require a huge overpayment, such as Xhekaj for the rare element he brings as well as RHP. I also would be hesitant to trade Roy, Kidney, Mailloux and Farrell as It would be pretty risky trading them before seeing how they develop playing pro hockey for awhile in the AHL.

Here is my list of Untouchable Prospects for this offseason transactions, this includes players that graduated to the big club this season. This list is in order

1.Kaden Guhle
2. Jural Slafkovsky
3.Joshua Roy
4.Logan Mailloux
5.Lane Hutson
6.Riley Kidney
7.Jordan Harris
8.Arber Xhekaj
9.Rapeil Harvey Pinard
10. Jacob Dobes
11. Owen Beck
12.Flilip Mesar

Players not on list but would like to keep. In order

Justin Barron

Sean Farrell

Jesse Ylonen

Johnny Kovacevic

Jared Davidson

Emil Heineman

Please list yours in order.

Amongst that list, I’d say Guhle and Slafkovsky, Hutson and Roy are the only ones I would consider « not worth trading » since their respective potential upsides are contender-worthy.

Regarding RHDs, one of Barron / Mailloux could be made expendable for the right player. Kovacevic is of course far from untouchable; might even fetch a nice return since he’s cost-controlled for 2 seasons.

One of Xhekaj and Harris could also be made expendable for the right player. The Habs likely prioritize keeping Xhekaj, if only because of his physical upsides.

Speaking of size, the Habs don’t need 4 small offensive wingers and can definitely afford to trade 1-2 of RHP / Farrell / Mesar.

One of Beck / Kidney could be made expendable for the right player. Davidson is very expendable.

As for Heineman and Ylonen, the Habs surely wish to use them as cost-controlled wingers for themselves, but they’re not untouchables per se. The Hans likely prioritize keeping Heineman for his 2-way play and physical tools

There are 18 players on your list, add Suzuki and Caufield and you got a full line up (only one goalie though), so basically you're saying it's All In with the current prospect pool or bust?

If the Habs were interested in for instance Alexis Lafreniere, a former first overall pick, the Rangers would only be interested in a couple of the players mentioned as part of a package. An untouchable list depends on what the goal is, if it's 'big game hunting' the list will be very short.

No doubt, I don't touch Slaf for Laffy. Slaf tools are more impressive anyway. I would touch 1st FLA pick and maybe another prospect not named Beck or Heineman. Maybe Mesar.

Falling in love with so many prospects is sick.
8 players not having played a single game of pro hockey labeled untouchables is sicker.

let me guess: 1st pick whatever the pick ends up will join that list right?

Leblanc, Tinordi, Kristo, Collberg, Mccarron, De la Rose, Scherbak, Juulsen, Vejdemo, Bitten, Brook, Lernout, all early picks in 10 straight drafts 2008-2017.
Other picks who made it same years Gallagher, Galchenyuk, Beaulieu, Poehling, Sergachev, Lehkonen, Pezzeta, Evans. Pretty bad for 10 drafts.

Yet fans once again over-value their draftees year after year.

Next one will be different… Sure.

Absolutely no one...

If Anaheim offers you the 1st overall for any combo of prospect, you have to be mentally unwell to refuse.

But your post is just as ridiculous. Harris and Barron (assuming he can remain healthy) would certainly be marketable. They wouldn't bring top level assets unless they were part of a package though.

Put it this way, they would not be sought after by other teams in a major deal, because players like them are a dime a dozen in every organization. As a throw in to a deal, sure, but nobody is targetting these guys as key players which was my point really.

Bedard once we draft him. Otherwise there isn't a player or prospect in our organization that is untouchable, only several that would required significant/unrealistic overpayment to have us consider it.

Zach Benson or Will Smith will be untouchable. People don't know how good they are actually. I think Habs should be ecstatic that their team will have opportunity to draft one of them!!
