Unprecedented dominance by a trio?

Since Oct. 2023, MacKinnon and Kucherov have joined McDavid at an offensive level that is clearly on another tier from the pack that is usually only seen from one or two players at a time. They are all 22% higher than the next best PPG; a best of the non Big 4 level of dominance.

They were clearly ahead of everyone last year and on pace to do so again.

Has there been a time when three players, on three different teams, over the course of one season, let alone two seasons, stood so far ahead of the pack?

Yzerman with Mario and Wayne is close.

mid eighties for defensemen I guess though I think Coffey himself towered over Bourque and Howe enough as well (Doug Wilson was right there with them as well when he played healthy but he was always playing hurt)

Hard to find a year quite as pronounced as 1989. Nicholls was in there with 150 points too, but if we remove the Gretzky factor he doesn't get 150. Maybe 110. In 1990 the same three did it on a smaller level. Mario had injuries, and Messier was right there in the mix too. I have to give 1989 the nod here.

i have been thinking this, too.

there was always a big drop off after Gretzky/Lemieux

Crosby/Ovechkin/Malkin was a thing, but Ovie fell of a cliff and the other two couldnt stay healthy at the same time much.

Jagr was a good but ahead of Sakic and Forsberg, the latter being hurt a lot.

Its very, very cool.

Would be interesting to see the last two years with ENP removed. Both Kuch and Mack have been racking them up compared to other top producers in the league.

The Maritimes
Gretzky, Lemieux, and Makarov are certainly the best ever trio of scorers to play hockey at the same time....but, of course, their best combined period happened in two different leagues, so they don't exactly qualify.

Also, there's a seven year age difference between Makarov and Lemieux (compared to only four years between Kucherov and McDavid). Makarov's absolute best was a bit before Lemieux's, but there's a few years in there where all three were really great.
