Should be interesting to see how many guys leave early for ncaa.

UNB will still be #1 choice for any player wanting to go school in Canada however UNB fans might have hard time adjusting to skill level
The UNB fans on this forum and who are really in the know sure . I’ve also heard someone who travels to nationals etc say “some of the UNB players played junior hockey before” … I had someone this year at a game try and tell me “Cole Huckins played for the NHL last year” , UNB’s fan base is largely people who have nothing better to do on a Friday night lol. Freddy isn’t the most happening spot and the sports options are limited , the same people going to UNB games are the people who blindly watch major junior hockey in other cities .
I bet 80% of the people who are regulars at the AUC don’t know this is happening or wouldn’t understand the impact of it, or even know where the players come from now .
I’ve had some really uneducated conversations around the rink , where the teams who don’t have large fan bases usually have only knowledgeable fans at the games , I’m way more likely to find an intelligent conversation at Udem or UPEI .

If you are someone like me who just ends up making conversation with people you realize very quickly no one has a sweet clue what’s going on and just stop trying to talk shop with people hahaha .

I feel bad for you man, but that's the result of being the "Most Powerful Nation in the History of the World."

People are not required to think. I have a similar problem at SMU or the Forum, where a guy will come to me and say "I just heard that blah, blah, blah.." When I say No, he'll say " He's been around DAL for 10 years."

Just enjoy the games and ignore the dummies.

UNB Stats Final.PNG

Emmet Sproule finished with the most points and Peter Reynolds finished up with a 30% shooting percentage. Sproule and Ben Corbeil led the team with 1.5 points per game. Justin Nolet with 28 assists and no goals is intereresting. Kale McCallum with most shots on net, followed closely by Cole MacKay.

All of the above I believe. I thinks that's one reason the team doesn't make a bigger deal about the rings - the UNB budget is tight and other varsity sports can get jealous about the bling that the hockey players keep earning.
Trust me I know , I used to work with an ex UNB Basketball player and he would almost daily go on about how “UNB only cares about mens hockey”

This is also common at a lot of schools. Example...track & field student athletes demanding to admin they get the same attention as more wider appeal sports like hockey or basketball.

IMO it's a fine line. I can see where the student athlete is coming from in their own self interest, but at the end of the day, I think the schools should focus their attention on where their most captive audience is at and build on it. Alot of schools don't exactly have significant staff resources to cover everything equally. I think schools do themselves a disservice when they try and be everything, only to end up mediocre (at best). Do small schools for example need a full slate of U SPORTS teams? I think there are arguments for both sides. Financially probably not, but for community/student culture building/varsity dept eliteness (sp?) it more often than not does make sense.

The budget thing is real too. I think budgets are tight everywhere, especially now with the new rules regarding the cap on international student admissions.

Perhaps I'm bias and only speaking as a fan of university sports, but I kind of like how some schools have become known for their niche...CBU for soccer, UNB for hockey etc.

This truly made me laugh out loud! Has there ever been a summary of which team ended UNB's season over the past 20ish years (during years they didn't win nationals)....X must top that list
Off the top of my head:

2001 - St. FX
2002 - Dal
2003 - UQTR
2004 - St. FX
2005 - Acadia
2006 - Acadia
2008 - Alberta
2010 - St. FX
2012 - Western
2014 - SMU
2015 - Alberta
2018 - St. FX
2020 - COVID
2022 - Ryerson

So yes, St. FX leads the way with four occasions.

You have an impressive memory if that’s off the top of your head lmao. I can’t remember what I ate an hour ago

Full disclosure, I lied lol. I originally posted starting with 2003 as that was the first season I started following them - the last 21 seasons were from memory. But I quickly edited to include MacDougall’s first two seasons as coach and did have to double check those years. Sue me.

That 2003-2004 team is probably my favourite UNB team ever lol.
I was a 10-11 years old kid who idolized Ryan Lindsay and Craig Mahon at that point lol.
