Ulf Samuelsson

The problem wasn't Ulf but what the Rangers traded to get him. He was just as good in NY as he was in Pittsburgh. Which was a 3-4 defenseman.

Neil Smith was down on Zubov because he supposedly wanted out of the lineup too often with minor injuries. Big mistake. A deal that really hurt the franchise down the road. Zubov, IMO is borderline HOF

The trade of him and Ron Francis to the Pens for Cullen and worthless Zarley Zalapski is the worst trade in hockey history because it is effectively the day my Whalers died. Ed Johnson makes Mike Milburry look like the greatest GM in hockey history in comparison.

Oh yeah, he really did it on purpose. And I guess Gretzky was suffering memory loss when he named Ulfie his assistant in Phoenix too.

You can relax, I wasn't being serious.

The most interesting thing about the glass accident per an Ulf interview is that Samuelsson was terrified to tell Wayne it was his wife (plus the fact that Gretzky returned and finished the game).

A funny true story; I was riding on an elevator with Craig Patrick ( I was not with him) when the trade between Hartford and Calgary was announced in 1994 (Michael Nylander, James Patrick and Zarley Zalapski from Hartford to Calgary for Gary Suter, Paul Ranheim and Ted Drury). Patrick recounted the trade and said to his traveling companion "Hartford just got fleeced again, Poor Eddie. Suter will never stay in Hartford"

You know it's the boring part of summer when an Ulf Samuelsson thread is sitting at the top of the page for 3 days.

Sorry, it can be hard to tell on a message board. I remember the game (think I was there) and being a little pissed off at Gretzky for not rushing to Janet's side. But, he said later that he trusted the club's medical people to take care of her.
