He played for this team 4 seasons, what type of impact did he have, was he any good?

Would he have any capacity to play in todays NHL if he was in his prime?

He had a lot of balls. Some would say he was dirty. He played right up to the edge and sometimes did go over the line. He took on some of the toughest guys around and they hated him. Nost opposing fans hated him. He was also pretty funny. That was a bad trade for the Rangers but Ulf was definitely a good player. We did not get him in his prime but he was still effective. In his prime he could definitely play today although he would have to reduce his penalties.

Worst trade the Rangers have made (and hopefully will make) in my lifetime.

Would definitely be dirty in today's game. Not sure about keeping up. He was pretty good in his prime.

That's unfortunately what Ulf will always be associated with as a Ranger.

One of the worst famous "grit" moves that plagued this organization for a long time. Zubov (oy) and Nedved for Samuelsson and Robataille.

Ulf was the textbook love him on your team, hate him on the opposition type of player. He had a bit of Avery in him, except dirtier. Considering who they traded for him, he was a dud. I remember a goal going in off his face in the 1996 second rd. vs. Pittsburgh.

I'd say the Mattias Norström trade was even worse, considering we got four seasons out of Ulfie.

To actually answer the OP -- it's hard to say, because it is so hard to compare players across eras. I personally think he would be able to play, because as dirty as he was (he used every dirty trick in the book, most of which he wouldn't get away with anymore), he was just so damn smart, I'm sure he'd find a way to succeed in almost any era.

Edit: on further reflection, I'd say the Norström trade was just as bad, rather than even worse...

Rick Middleton!!!
:D

Like so many before Ulf, he came a little too late in his career. At the time he was definitely on the decline. Was a bad trade for the Rangers.

You know that, before recorded history, New Rock Rangers traded away their best young mammals to the Boston Ground Soths for aging dinosaurs who once ruled the Earth, but couldn't adapt to the new climate of the post-meterorite NHL.

Nedved and Zubov for Luc and Ulfie was a VERY BAD trade, made in response to the Legion of Doom in Philadelphia. Hated it the day it was made. Hate it to this day. This trade, in my opinion, begins the dark times where the Rangers were trading, trying to chase the lead dog.

Our power play was never the same again. I think it's still cursed from that trade..

We didn't know what we traded away in Mattias Norstom until after the dust settled, but we know why it was made...

The microcosm of the entire Ranger story.

Came to the Rangers in a horrendous trade for the Rangers.

Was effective, dirty and hated when he played for other teams.

Was ineffective, taken advantage of and revenge on while on the Rangers for past sins he committed while on other teams.

In other words, all bad and no good for the Rangers.

Ulf and Tomas Sandstrom were together in the Swedish army in Falun (Dalarna) back in 1984. We had some mutual military exercises with them (I was at I2/Karlstad in the same defense district) and we constantly kicked their buts. It all went downhill for thos two guys after that... ;)

Your time frame is off. Nick is referring to his Ranger trivia from the when the arthropods ruled the Earth prior to the reign of the Dinosaurs. I have to agree that the trade of the 6 legged Rock Middleton was terrible.

Every time I somehow manage to forget about that WOAT Zubov trade, I get reminded of it again!

That trade shouldn't have been as bad as it was, if the "true" Robitaille showed up for us (or if we didn't give up on him and flip him for...Kevin Stevens, ugh). Hindsight makes it look a lot worse than it was at the time. That, and the fact that we later traded Kovalev just to get Nedved back.

Back on topic, I really liked Ulfie in NY, but I was too young to really know how well he was playing.

In fairness - I think the Middleton trade absolutely was the worst trade in team history. It would be the equivalent of a couple years ago Tampa trading Kucherov for Iginla.

Lucky Luc really played like ass in the blue shirt. That's what really made the trade horrendous. Also, no one questioned Zubov's offensive prowess, but I think very few thought he would turn into the complete package that he did later in his career.

The Middleton was terrible.
