I think that we should expect more offense out of guys like Skinner, RV and Henrique. And I don't think that it's completely unreasonable either.
The teams that we're likely to face in the West are going to have stronger bottom six options. I think that it's important that the Oilers have an answer for them the way they did last summer.
The Oilers don't get to game 7 without the Janmark - Henrique - Brown line firing the way it did. This team can't be a two-man attack and expect to win.
I don't think I'm sold on Frederic, but I get the draw. Kostin, as explained before, doesn't play enough to make a difference. There's a reason why his coaches don't trust him. This is a team that doesn't take a lot of penalties. We need a fast, physical, toolsy forward that compliments skill.

Mc-D will be back to his dominant self before the season ends--no doubt--but the question is can he and Drai go lights out to keep the boys from being bounced out of the playoffs even in the early rounds? I have some doubts in watching the rest of the team play these last few weeks.
I think that both fans and players have grown fatigued over the goal tending situation. Going into the 3rd season where you have a chance to win it all means learning from the first 2 years-- that you need some better backup strength. I'm not saying trade Skinner but they have to make some kind of move before the deadline.
There aren’t many of those available that score enough to make difference.
We could be looking at teams like Colorado, a Gibson over Skinner makes a bigger difference than spending even more on another forward that scores maybe 4 or 5 goals in the post season total.

I can’t see how anyone would think Gibson would be a real improvement, he’s going to scuffle with giving away uncontested chances at the back as well. He’s not the kind of goalie that steals you a win.
We’re in a pickle, we don’t have assets or capspace for a goalie good enough to bail out our frequent defensive mistakes and so in love with the metrics that we’re not about to change the way we play in our own end.

What I noticed against the Avs is that the Oilers lack 1 shot , quick moving forwards with size who put themselves in the right spots to bury chances. A lot of skating around, cycling pucks and hope shots into the goalies chest. Hyman is regressing. Its clearly obvious.

He has the 5th best GSAA in the league while playing for a garbage team. It’s a near certainty he’d be a real improvement over our sieve who has no business being a starter on an elite team.

Not sure I agree the third goal was all that stoppable but those first two were ugly, those are goals you expect a beginner goalie playing in peewee to let in.
You're not acknowledging the fact that Anaheim isn't retaining half of that contract. They would have no reason to.
For Gibson to happen, the cost would be massive factoring in the necessary cap moves. And you'd be tying yourself to a goalie who for four of the past five seasons, has been a goalie at the same level or below Stu Skinner.
That isn't a risk that a team expecting to win a Stanley Cup can make.

I think I'd rather play the Kings than deal with the Avs or the Wild. Minnesota in the first round would be a nightmare.

The guy can't even play regular with a shitty team like the last place Sharks, and in the 26 he's suited up for, has the sparkling stats of a goal and 4 points and a minus 4 rating. already on his 4th team, and destined for the KHL. A hard pass. Oh, but he had a good few playoff games back in the day. So did Zach Kassian.
Would be a very exciting matchup. If Kane comes back 80-90% of his former self and we get Trent Frederic or Kostin.
Either side that advances will be heavily damaged though.
They would have 3.2 million reasons to retain on his deal, they'd be saving millions of dollars versus keeping him to presumably back up Dostal.
Goaltending is fairly obviously the weakest part of the team. The forwards are alright (top 10 in scoring), the D is ok under Knob/Coffey's structure.
Skinner crumbles like a cookie anytime he faces a top end team, his numbers are dropping for another year in a row and he puts the team behind the 8 ball many nights by letting in a boat load of goals against in the 1st period and then hoping the team can claw back for him.
Winning a Cup with a .900 starter (maybe .905 in a "good season" lol) is extremely difficult, probably bordering on almost impossible. This dude needed to take some big steps in his game and he isn't and he's being exposed. We were fortunate last playoff run that he didn't need to be lights out because we didn't necessarily face another great goalie until the very end (where we lost).
There's no guarantee that happens again. You could be in trouble with Skinner right off the bat depending on who you draw in the 1st round.
If the cost was basically nothing, I'd take back a 26 year old Zach Kassian on this team too as a 13th forward you can cycle in.
Role players are not stars for a reason, one of the reasons is they often produce better in certain niches on certain teams but it doesn't always translate everywhere they go. It worked out well for him here, he clearly liked it here, if the cost is like a 5th + 6th round pick (adding in a 2nd team to retain a few bucks) I'd rather have him than not.
He scored at a higher rate than McLeod, Foegele, Holloway did in the playoffs. -4 on a terrible San Jose team isn't that bad either.

Not buying low is a big part of the reason out roster continually has question marks all the time.
Also is Evander Kane even playing in the playoffs? How sure are you as to what player he's even going to be? Is Podkolzin supposed to handle all the physical duties from the forward spots if a game/series gets a little rough?
This team needs toughness and there's no cookie for paying out your ass to get a bottom 6 player like we did with Henrique last year. I'm suggesting a cheaper option who has played well here in the past.
I'd rather spend elsewhere, we've paid a ton for this forward group as is. 4 million for Arvidsson, 3 million for Skinner, 4 million total for Connor Brown this year, 3 million for Henrique, 5 million for Evander Kane, now we need to add another 4-5 million dollar forward or maybe even two for 6 mill or so? It's getting ridiculous.
The goaltending is by far the weakest part of the team, that needs to have some money/assets spent on it, the D still probably needs some work, can't keep dumping mountains of cash into forwards especailly when most of these guys can't even be properly played in the top 6.

Hot take - LA wins the division and we play Vegas in the first round. Kings are basically unbeatable at home and have played 10 fewer home games than road games so far. I wouldn’t count them out.

There is no example of a team willing to spend $15m in actual cash to 'save' the same amount. Anaheim is happy keeping Gibson as a healthy tandem goalie. That contract isn't preventing them from doing anything. Look at their situation realistically. Any kind of retention on his contract would take premium assets to convince them to eat salary. And again, you're talking about a goalie with a larger sample of average to poor results dating back many seasons.
He's a trade target marred with unrealistic cost expectations and even more unrealistic performance expectations.
I don't necessarily disagree that the Oilers could use a veteran fallback option for this playoff run. But we're a month away from the trade deadline. You're not going to see the team add a new starting goalie.
