I think he probably makes at minimum 8 mil a year with a max term deal. Considering how many teams have cap space to spare, how in demand RHD D are, how good he is, and the season he's coming off of, he'll make serious bank.

I'm really interested to see if either/both of Carlson and Tavares decide to change teams, will their be a sign and trade to let other teams bring down the AAV with an extra year.

While a sign and trade isn't impossible, it would have to be done before the free agency period starts on July 1st. Yeah, the Players will have an opportunity to talk to prospective teams for a few days beforehand, but if there's more then one team they're willing to go to they may not be able to maximize bids from the competitors until July 1st hits.

this statement makes no sense.
Read it again slowly.

An elite offensive and average defensive Dman IS NOT a legit #1 in today's NHL but John Carlson IS a legit #1 in today's NHL.

Here to help.

FWIW I'd take Carlson over every Dman on the NJD quite easily at either strategic category. 1D

how many DMen in the league are actually elite both offensively and defensively? I bet you could count on one hand.

yeah no crap, so would I...thats why we want to sign him.

To my mind I can almost count them on one finger but that does not mean there is a single 1D in the NHL today.

If he would be the #1 defensive and offensive Dman on your team I'd say that makes him a 1D, semantics aside. If you think Carlson is a ~Top 30 offensive Dman (no room for argument) and ~ Top 30 defensive Dman (I struggle to count 30 definitively better) I'd say he's a 1D semantics included.

It's arguing semantics, but I'd put Carlson down as a top-pairing defender and he has been for the last four years.

In there, there's definitely been seasons (like this past one) where he's played like a #1D. I don't think I would tout him as an out-and-out #1D because I think that's saying he plays like a #1D every year.

not really interested from a NJD perspective, but I’m pretty indifferent (I think he stays in Washington anyway). I’m betting the contract he’s going to get will start to look pretty awful in a few years

Leafs and Devils are going to be all in on Carlson. Could see a huge bidding war starting for him.

Plus there's also the third category that's really important for defencemen: Transition. And Carlson is pretty fantastic in that area.

I expect the Caps will hesitate, a little, but give him 8 x $9M. The cap is going up $5M, and it's the right time for Orpik's buyout. Grubauer will be dealt for futures, and replaced by Samsonov on his entry-level deal. The cap issues for Washington are rather overblown. This is entirely about Carlson's preferences, which aren't really known. Many teams will back up a truck for him.

NJ, Toronto will definitely be kicking the tires on him. Would be weird not seeing him in a Caps uni.

We could keep Butcher and Vatanen and start over from scratch! Our D is not good.
