Buffalo's Erik Portillo is 100% available. He wouldn't cost a whole lot as he COULD test the market as a UFA after his collegiate season, but he does have legit starting goalie upside.

Cost would be pretty reasonable -- got a mid-tier prospect with size?
What about someone like Jayden Struble? Same risk as Portillo, but he's a physical d prospect with some upside.

Portillo is definitely someone who should be on MTL's radar, if he isn't already. So count me in for this as well.

Yeah. He should be on the radar of any team who has a spot for him in the AHL next year. The major reason why he's not signing here is that Adams and company have CLEARLY prioritized Levi (not that I blame them). He's going to be the #1 in Rochester next year which would leave Portillo as either the #2 in Rochester or the #1 in Cincinatti.

Frankly, I think there's a good chance that Portillo establishes himself in the NHL before Levi.

I can't see them giving a pair of rookies the net in the AHL. Other options would be Cincy as the starter which isn't the best but would get him game action, signing for a team overseas (I can't see him going back to his development club because Frolunda isn't going to hand the starter job over when Lars Johansson is signed through 2025), or being lent out to another organization which I haven't seen since Ollie Kolzig got sent to Rochester because Bryan Dafoe had the Caps AHL net IIRC.

Yeah, that's probably a decent proposal since both are in similar boats with being able to go to UFA if they don't want to sign with their respective teams. And if they both did sign after a trade, it adds an interesting side story to possible future games.

Not to mention that it hits some pretty good holes in both teams:

Montreal needs a young goalie with potential. We need size and defensive prospects in general.

Just makes sense for each side.

Interesting to think about a Florida/Montreal swap of goalies. Price has $10.5 million AAV for three years after this. Bobrovsky has $10 million AAV for three years after this. (I know that Bobrovsky does not fit the age bracket OP requested, but he is still a serviceable goalie.)

Price will likely be on LTIR for the rest of his career, but dumping his contract would allow the Habs to avoid being in LTIR for the next three years. (I know that there will be lots of posters advising that there are no negative attributes of a team being in LTIR; these posters will be wrong.) Bobrovsky is clearly overpaid, but at least he can play.

Columbus and Toronto made a similar trade where Columbus acquired David Clarkson for Nathan Horton. Clarkson was overpaid, but could still play. Horton would never play again, but Toronto planned to stay in LTIR and was not worried about the negative impact.

What's wrong with Portillo?

I wouldn't say anything is "wrong" with Portillo per se. He very obviously (and probably correctly) sees Devon Levi as a major obstacle in front of him. It's quite obvious the Sabres are going to have him starting in Rochester next year which means that he either spends next year backing up Levi (which the Sabres probably don't want) or being the #1 netminder in ECHL Cincy (which Portillo probably doesn't want).

So given that he feels blocked by Levi, he doesn't want to sign with the Sabres. If traded, he could very well sign if he sees a path to a starting AHL net next year (or even being given a legit chance to an NHL net, which again isn't likely in Buffalo)

If I remember correctly part of the reason that deal was made was because Horton wasn't covered by insurance.
