Taking place in Finland. Shown on TSN and RDS.

Prior to the start of the tournament, Canada will play a pair of pre-tournament games against Finland on April 20 and Norway on April 23. The quest for a gold medal begins April 25 at 12 p.m. ET/9 a.m. PT against Sweden. Canada will also face Czechia on April 26, Switzerland on April 28 and Kazakhstan on April 30 to close out preliminary-round action. The semifinals are set for May 4 before the tournament concludes with the medal games on May 5.

Since 2002, Canada has won four gold medals at the IIHF U18 World Championship (2003, 2008, 2013, 2021), in addition to one silver (2005) and four bronze (2012, 2014, 2015, 2023).

Team Canada and Finland played today. They almost never show the exhibition games for this tournament.

Canada won 5-1.

Ritchie, Elick, Martone, Wetsch, and Greentree scored for Canada.

Schaefer had 3 assists.

The goalies split the game.

Joona Saarelainen (2024) scored for Finland.

too many 2025 and 2026 draft candidates...

Although a lot of the 2025 draft eligible players are 2006 fall birthdays, so they're turning 18 this year and won't be eligible for next year's team. Due to their birthday falling in October-December they're not eligible to be drafted in 2024.

The exceptions to this factor are Desnoyers, Schaefer & Hamilton. They're actually 2007 birth years.

Martone will challenge for 1 OA next year. Big, fast and skilled, he reminds me of a young Stamkos and has a chance to be a more impactful player than Celebrini.

His junior team must still be playing.

Yeah, Chicoutimi was just eliminated Friday night, so it hasn't even been 48 hours yet. lol
He still has next year's tournament to play too (2007 birth year). A lot of the players are in their last eligible tournament with the exception of McKenna, Schaefer, Hamilton and Desnoyers. I don't expect McKenna to play in this tournament after this year as Medicine Hat should be a monster team. They were really young this year.

They need a couple of more forwards, so we'll see if he gets added. He might say no if he needs the rest.

Team Canada has added a few players:

Maxim Masse, F, (2024), Ollie Josephson, F, (2024), Henry Mews, RD, (2024), Frankie Marrelli, LD, (2024) and goaltender Jack Ivankovic (2025) have all been added.

That should be it. No more adds unless there is an injury.

Which draft eligible player will shine against 2025 and 2026 draft eligibles and gets the shit hyped of him this year?

My bets: Helenius, Greentree.

Masse should be motivated, a good U18 could be the difference between being a late first rounder and an early to mid-ish second rounder for him.

There aren't that many draft eligible 2025 and 2026 players in this tournament unless you're exclusively talking about Canada, which has the most - by far. Finland has none. Sweden has like, 2 players.

Helenius will be one of the best players in this tournament regardless - if he plays.

I agree, and I think that's why he went. He had a very up and down year. I'm interested to see how well he skates in this tournament. It was definitely an issue for Wood, but his skills and who he was playing with (Celebrini for the most part) helped alleviate that issue. It's a fast paced game. Poor skaters stand out.

Yes, he should be the best player beside Gavin McKenna (of course), who's just on another level (McDavid tier) even if 2 years younger.

Could Iginla join the squad?

Yes, they can add throughout the group stage. I'm sure they're asking him. We'll see if he actually goes.

This is a big opportunity for Mews to showcase his potential. Believed to be a sure first round choice at the start of the season, Mews has been surpassed by the plethora of excellent defensive prospects, and it now appears that he may slip into the top of the second round.

Here's Mews' chance to show that he can shine/perform on the big stage. I think he will.

Yeah, I thought he would end up top 20, but it doesn't look like it. He had a solid year, though. I peg him as a Josh Morrissey type D at NHL level.
