ON a serious note.. Czechs get 3 days off before Quarters. Totally unheard of at a U18. Not even sure it's good.

The age old question that never really has an answer. Does a long layoff cause a team to get out of sync or does it give them the rest they need to come out full throttle?

Everyone thought Kazakhstan would fall apart as a hockey country once Soviet remnant systems had run their course. Impressive of them to make top division and now a couple times show they can hang in there with mainstays.

Kazakhstan's U18 team just earned their first ever win at this level! This will definitely be a big confidence builder ahead of the upcoming relegation game.

On the positive side the oil had a big gut it out playoff style win last night. Your guy Bouchard was the hero but Skinner was the first star.

You could argue that standings-wise this was a bigger game for Czechia. But for this Kazak team to win a game as underdogs against a traditional hockey country like Czechia is, this will definitely boost their confidence ahead of the relegation match, be it against Norway or Slovakia.

Kazakhstan's U18 team just earned their first ever win at this level! This will definitely be a big confidence builder ahead of the upcoming relegation game.

Congratulations to them. They earned a promotion to the top divison for the U20 division this season with wins over France and Denmark. That will be their first time in the top divison at the U20 since the 2009 tournament, they had dipped as low as finishing 17th or 18th every year between 2010 and 2015. They finished 11th at the most recent World Championships after making a decision to no longer use imported naturalized North American trained skaters (think Kevin Dallman and Nigel Dawes), including a shootout win over Slovakia.

Things appear to be improving for Kazakhstan.

Absolutely.. we needed 2 points here. Kazakhs didn't. Happy for them and the win obviously but this was a big f*** up from the Czechs.
