I was at the semifinals on Sunday at the LaBahn Arena in Madison, Wisconsin. The tournament was relocated from Finland. The first game in Group A was Finland versus Canada. The faster Canadians dominated the play in period 1 and outshot the Finns. Midway through period 2, Finland scored to tie the game at 1-1. The shots were 22-7 Canada at that point. Emilia Kyrkko, the goalie for Finland, kept her team in the game. In period 3, Karel Prefontaine of Canada scored the game winner and own 2-1 and outshot Finland 45-10.

In the evening game, the US took a 1-0 lead over Sweden. A parade to the penalty box in period 2 allowed Sweden to go ahead 2-1. Period 3 began with the 2000 fans booing the refs for about 2 minutes when they came out on the ice. It was well deserved as some Swedish players played liked goons and the US was repeated penalized after a retaliation. The worst was #24 for the US skating back to her bench and being crosschecked from behind 5 feet from the door by #9 from Sweden. The US player was face down in the ice for 30 seconds. Edwards, #10 from the US and 6'2" knocked the Swedish player down and got a minor. I honestly thought a fight was going to break out when 2 or 3 Swedes went after Edwards and none of them get a penalty. The US player could have gotten a broken neck and there was not penalty. She came back for the third period. 24 scored a goal for the US and Edwards had an assist in the 3-2 US victory.

A lady seated nearby told me during the first game that the team from Sweden played "dirty". I never imagined just how dirty they were, especially #9. Eight seconds into period 2, the US RW intentionally checked #9 and got an illegal hitting penalty. It was an attempt to send a message to #9, but she ignored it and continued her dirty play the entire game. She should have been ejected for the crosscheck in period 2.

I have been to 1000 hockey games and this one may have been the worst officiated that I ever saw. I will be rooting for Finland in the bronze game! My daughter told me that both of the refs were from Canada. The refs, #24 and #26, should be fired. #24 should be banned from all of hockey.

Group B at the Capitol Arena had the Czech Republic beating Slovakia 7-2. The other game was Switzerland beating Germany 7-1.

Sweden.

The Finland versus Sweden game was 0-0 after one period. The two refs are #10 from the US, the best ref that I saw yesterday; and #26 from Canada who has called zero penalties so far today. It has been a pretty clean game so far.

They just forgot to start the time clock in period 2. They ran off 14 seconds to fix it. Finland scored after passing the puck around and to the left point. The player, Sanni Vanhanen glided down to the face off dot and fired a laser into the far upper corner unassisted. Sweden ended the period with a holding penalty.

Vanhanen scored her second goal of the game about 6:30 into period 3. Finland is ahead 2-0.

Vanhanen got the Hat Trick with 8:45 remaining in the period. She wheeled in over the Blue Line around some defenders and hit the post on the way into the net.

Sweden pulled their goalie after a face off win and scored on a goal mouth scramble with about 5 minutes remaining. It was disallowed upon goalie interference. It is still 3-0 Finland or 3-0 Verhanen.

The final was 3-0.

If you thought women's adult hockey was not entertaining, I give you the U-18's. :(

Still... Go Canada Go.

Canada scored a goal in period 1 of the gold medal game. In period 2 they scored 2 fast goals to open a 3 goal lead. The US scored 2 goals in about 7 seconds apart in the last 2 minutes by #25 Finley McCarthy and #18 Claire Enright to make it 3-2 Canada. The shots are 21-16 US.

The US hit the post during a late power play. The shots ended up 31-21. Canada won the gold with their team defense.
