WJC: U18 D1A, 20-26.04, Szekesfehervar, Hungary

..based on? Hungary just got completely dominated by Ukraine, I have hard time seeing how wouldn't Austria just do the same.
because I worry that team Austria will not beat any of Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Slovenia. When it's all on the line against the host Hungary, weird things can happen.

Well, 5-1 Denmark over Ukraine. Like I worried, goaltending will likely hold the Ukrainians back in this tourney.

Ukraine up 6-3 vs Austria at the moment. I don't follow junior hockey at this level. Is Ukraine levelling up to their former level or is this Austria generation that bad?

I remember in the early 2000s Ukraine used to be a mainstay at the Championship level. Can they reach that level again or his hockey dead in Ukraine?

Yeah Ukraine's been trending upwards for sure, last year for example they lost in OT to Germany, and if they had won they'd have been in the elite division for U18 this year. They're a step behind that this year because of goaltending, but overall hockey for Ukraine is doing decently, probably in part with all of the kids playing over Europe and NA.

Ukraine has seriously improved.

The primary reason ironically being the Ukraine war, with many European clubs opening their doors to Ukrainian kids 3 years ago, which has turbocharged the efficiency of their national program, as a part of their hockey pyramid at the youth level is effectively outsourced to other countries with higher quality coaching and a more competitive hockey environment.

This is already bearing fruit at the junior level and is bound to improve their men's team in a few years time as well.

Yeah, by the time Kosarev, Haponenko, Shybinskyi, Pazii, etc are on the national team, the top guys on that team will still be fairly young, so I see elite division for the NT in the relatively near future.

With Russia and Belarus likely returning to international competition at some point during the next few years, I don't think it is that certain, but Ukraine is definitely trending upwards and doing it rapidly

The game against Denmark was what it was but I must say otherwise Ukraine is very impressive. Very few teams dominate possession to this extent even if they do possess the talent, in theory.

Denmark doesn't even look that good, but their chance conversion is top class. That or every other team has a bad goaltending.

Austria playing a team that didn't show much whole tournament and as long as no points are lost, it's fine.

What could go wrong??

On a more serious note - Austria and France in 1B (without RUS and BLR). Pretty crazy on paper.
