The Russians have an embarrassment of riches up front. Sokolov, Abramov, Shabanov, Rubstov, A Popogayev. All were very dominant in the first. A treat to watch! The Canadian squad looks a little overwhelmed by the skill level and speed. Sam Steele was the best Canadian by a considerable margin. Plays with confidence, has good speed, and isn't afraid to drive to the net.

Canada Black were actually pretty good but they need to get more done offensively, they got like no chances in close and just got outside shots.

Sean Day slashed a Slovakian player at the end of the period, he dropped his glove and stick and went straight to the bench. Day was the one who did that when the commentators mentioned a Slovakian player leaving the bench.

I'm really liking Vitali Abramov so far. I'm watched on a delay though so I haven't seen the Sokolov goal :(

2-1 Russia. Poirier with a nice shot from the slot. Much better period for Canada thus far. Carrying the play.

Canada Red is looking great, in the offensive zone alot. Mete-Fabbro will be the best D-pairing in the tournament IMO, both can skate, attack and play smart defence, lethal combination. Then you add Day anchoring another pairing, that's a solid defence. The offence is loaded, McLeod, Bitten, Mascherin, Kryski, Patrick, Brown, all very good players. Slovakia isn't a bad team, they might be the worst in the tournament but I'd more interested to see how Red does against some of the other teams.

I thought Bean, McKinstry, Clague, Nother were pretty solid defensively tonight but the offence needs to be better. Need more chances, the 3rd period was a good period but nothing to show for it. They'll be better next game, just their 2nd time playing together.

They were going for a goal that's why it was a two on one.

I thought the defense was trying to do too much. Instead of initiating outlet passes I saw Clague and Bean in particular try to lead the charge and go through the Russian team which they then end up turning over the puck and leading to odd man rushes.

The two on one was a bad read by one of the defense men (not sure who) standing still in the neutral zone (not covering anyone) with two guys behind him.

I do agree that the team will be better next game. The chemistry isn't there right now and like you said the team has only played together two times.

The goal by Otto Mäkinen was very impressive while skating past the opponents' defence. Haven't seen enough of the guy. Overall was suprised Finland running over Canadian team while leaving their best players home. Too bad the stream was awful making it difficult to follow up on players.

Who are Finland missing? Puljujarvi and Laine for sure but anyone else?

Watched Canada Red and Slovakia last night.

That Mete-Fabbro pairing was fantastic. Both such dynamic players, true game-breaking talents on the back end. I also thought Day was ok.

Aside from the already-mentioned defencemen, I also liked Mascherin, Patrick and Brown for Canada.

Lone Slovakian standout for me was Milos Roman, plays a complete gm. ’99 Ruzicka is expectedly raw. Solensky/Hrehorcak had some moments.

As far as Sweden-USA from yesterday:

Likes for USA today vs Sweden included Jones, Keller, Khodorenko, Pastujov and Lindgren. Max Jones in particular had a great game.

Likes for Sweden vs. USA included Bratt, Fallstrom, Nylander, Horrsell and Moverare. I also thought 15 year old Marcus Davidsson showed some flashes for Sweden today. Nice hands and a decent goal in the 2nd period.

I am not sure what Hockey Canada is thinking trying to support 3 teams when all others have 1. No wonder they are getting blown out by Russia, Fins and USA.

Slovakia is horrible, Each Canadian team has been blown out, and bad, The Red team lost 5-2 against Russia. They really need to rethink what they are doing. Sure they played great against a very poor Slovakia team. Russia and the Fins sat back in both their games in per 3. Maybe try 1 or 2 teams, But three does not work. The 98's are not the 97's by any means. The white team has been out scored 11-1. This is not atom hockey anymore people.

You do realize that this is already a condensed version of the way the tournament was previously handled, right?

Canada used to roll out (as recently as last winter) 5 teams from across the country. This new way of doing things is much better. Better players attend, due to not being restricted by hometown or home province.

I have no complaints with sending three teams.

Bob McKenzie highlighted a bunch of it just this morning, actually.

In full agreement. The U-17 team from the fellow hockey powers are getting far too strong. Only a matter of time before they have one makeshift U-17 national team.
