Prospect Info: Tyler Kleven (D) at 44th Overall (Sens traded up)

That's a steal, and this contract will bring him to the point of replacing Cahbot
I'm not convinced Kleven really can replace Chabot, they occupy completely different roles.

At best, this would give Yakemchuk time to get far enough along to replace Chabot's role, and Kleven would take on Jensen's role only as a partner to Yakemchuk.

Deal seems fair. Not great, not bad in terms of AAV. I would be shocked if Kleven tops out as anything more than a #5/6 d-man based on what I have seen. Then again he is still very young and raw and seems quite coachable.

Awesome! Kleven had a great year, huge growth, and is exactly what this blueline needs. Solid #5 that could easily be a top 4 beside an anchoring skilled 3 dman in the years to come as needed. I don’t see his role changing too much, but I think he’ll continue to improve. Love this signing.

He has the tools in his toolbox. It is exciting to anticipate. I remember feeling this way about Jared Cowan. Too bad that did not work out.
I became concerned about Cowan when he was not used much by the Canadian junior team. I think injuries reduced his effectiveness in the NHL; however he had some tools including skating and physical size / play.

He hates the pick
I think he would have preferred another defenseman to Yak when the Senators made the pick. As did I and others. Yak has not accomplished much since to change minds whereas other D picks have continued to develop and progress. Homerism is in play here for Yak.

Kleven did kind of suck at camp/during pre-season, I think Sebrango even outplayed him if I’m remembering correctly.

So I kinda get it. He’s riding the high of being the guy who broke out in the playoffs and they likely want to make sure he doesn’t get complacent. Just might be one of those people that needs a little push like that sometimes.
Proper coaching to get "the best" out of certain players who need to be "motivated".

Congrat to Kleven, in 2 years he’ll be a top 4 and ready for 20 minutes a night.

Raised his game in the playoffs, the exact type of player you build around. seems like a stellar dude too, the type of guy you can fight alongside and he’ll never take a step back

Love it. I absolutely love the left side of our D and I think Kleven showed he could eventually develop into a darned good second pairing guy too.
I won't go as far as you to say I "love" the left side of our D core. It's getting better but still lacks physical play and strong defensive play.

Chabot seems to avoid physical play and seems to lack focus at times, is nonchalant, and goes for big skates rather than quick start-stops. He is not strong defensively, nor dynamic offensively.

Sanderson is developing very well and looking like a potential future Norris type player.

Kleven is developing well too and I hope he becomes more physical in his play going forward.

I like the left side of our D core but there is room for improvement.

Happy to have Kleven for the next 2 years at $1.6M.

I hope he plays like a $6M D over that period and gets a much bigger contract in the future.

Fair, but I think with the way the organization wants the team to be, he is going to be playing 20 plus in the second year of the contract. he skates too well, has great vision and has the right type of brooding, developing edge to his game. If he thinks what I think he is, he will be a 7M player next contract, and Chabot will be gone.

I agree. Hamonic spoke pretty highly of him too, talking about how much upside he has and how he will impact the game in like 4 different ways, including offensively.

I agree with Micklebot too, in that you need offensive drivers on the backend, so Yak’s development will play a part in it for that side of things, especially PP2.

The prospect of what a Kleven - Yak pairing could look like if both hit their ceilings is really exciting. Our future D has potential to be great.

I had him around $1.2M. Not mad with this signing, at all. Keeps him in RFA territory when his deal is done, too. Great signing!
So did I. No worries & based on observation, players going for new contracts often go for a bit higher than what people expect.

Cowan wasn't a very smart player, that was his biggest hurdle, then the injuries ended his NHL days.

I think the organization and the coaching staff have very high expectations for TK. Coaches & Management do not like singling out a player in both good and bad times and on multiple occasions both Staios and Green mentioned that they were disappointed in TK'S start to the season and in his training camp.

I imagine that is because he has the tools to be a fantastic player and because of just how important of a role he can play on this team if he fulfills his potential.
