Now, this is my hypothesis. People keep making noise about Kucherov, Kucherov, Kucherov. Why isn't he signed yet? Is another team going to offer sheet him? Tampa has no cap to sign him long term! There is definitely a problem in Tampa Bay, and right now, the way I see it, they're going to have to make a choice. Not for this year. Next year. They have to resign Johnson, Palat, and Drouin. They're all going to see fairly hefty pay raises, especially Drouin.

Signing Kuch won't be difficult if we put someone like Callahan on LTIR, or find a trade suitor for Filppula or Big Ben.

The problem will be signing all of those guys next year along with Kuch this year. Ergo, it very well may come down to the organization deciding between Kucherov and Johnson. I personally see us not being able to afford TJ, so we will have to let him go. If it's a choice between the two point blank, I'm sorry, but I'm going with Kuch.

So, how much would TJ get on the open market?

There's no reason we should be entertaining moving Johnson now. Next year, maybe. But not now. There's no reason to handicap this year's team to solve next year's problems.

Ideally, I was thinking this would be a move made at the NHL draft, especially if we don't win the Stanley Cup.

If we do win, and TJ is a huge contributing factor, well, we'll have to think about that then.

I think we might have to entertain the idea of moving Johnson at the end of the season, but his value could change massively between now and then. If it's true that he's healthy now, and if it's true that he wasn't all of last year, then we can probably expect 60 points. But it's not outside the realm of possibility that he could blow up like he did in 14/15 and wind up our best player.

His value is a hard thing to gauge. Personally, I think the 14/15 Johnson is the real Johnson, but I also worry that he might be a tad injury prone. And we know he's not nearly as good when playing injured. So it's all really murky.

Why wouldn't you trade/buyout/hope for expansion/pay another team to take Callahan, Filpula, Garrison?

Why should we buyout or pay another team to take a very serviceable top4 defender off our hands? :shakehead

The problem with moving him at the end of the year is, we won't get anything of value back. A fourth or fifth round pick for a few extra days of talking to him? Worthless, really.

Johnson's going to be an RFA, not a UFA.

Oh, yeah that's right. But what kind of a package could we expect from him?

Depends on the season he has. As of right now, there'd be no point in trading him. It's throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

In June, it's tough to say. Would anyone be shocked if Johnson put up 70 points again? Or 35 in an injury-riddled season? Or anything in between, really.

Yes, one of those guys will probably have to be traded. As fans we look at who should be kept and base it on skill and who can be replaced. But GMs have to factor in money. One of those guys could flat out just price themselves out and that will be the decision maker. And the guy who brings back the most could also be the one most likely traded.

a 1st, roster player and prospect if we move him next summer

Without a contract hes worth nothing of the sort. 1st + B prospect + cap dump maximum.

Also, teams will wait until your cap situation forces you to make a deal so they can buy for cheap.

As a RFA, he's worth much more than that.

#1 centers don't come cheap and a lot of teams need them; we'd have no difficulty getting a good price for Johnson. Yeah, our cap situation could theoretically depress the price a little, but all it takes is for two teams to decide that improving their own situation is more important than holding our feet to the flames and we've got ourselves a bidding war. Supply and demand simply outweighs our cap situation in affecting the market.

He def is. But (most) gms are smart and like an earlier poster said, if you can't sign him you're going to get lowball offers. The best of the lowball wins. Tampa will need to make some interesting decisions going forward.

Again though, that only lasts until one of those teams decides their need for a #1 center is worth making a fair offer for him. There are a lot more teams out there that need a player like Johnson than there are players like Johnson available; the idea of lowballing the Lightning only works as long as none of those teams is willing to jump their price up to win the bidding. With supply and demand so heavily in Tampa's favor do you really think that every single team in need of a center is going to decide that screwing Tampa is more important than filling that need? That every single one of them would rather let another team (possibly a rival) get him than jump their price into the realm of a fair offer?

Lowballing someone only works if their need to sell is greater than your need to buy. Unless he has a spectacular season Tampa won't need to sell Johnson at all - they'll have other players like Palat or Drouin whom they could just as easily trade for the needed cap space. Meanwhile a lack of a true top line center is a critical need and such players don't become available often. Tampa could get lowballed on somebody like Killorn, but not on Johnson.

Fair enough statement, selling on killorn may very well need to be the case; or packaging an asset like Callahan with a draft pick to have lv take him at expansion. Drouin does very little for the cap as he's coming off an elc, 925k isn't going to do much. I get that bishop is coming off the books, but most of his cap is most likely going to be allocated to Kucherov. Again, most gms are shrewd; in that they know the ammount that they'd be willing to pay for any given asset. If you can get multiple high level assets for a guy who doesn't have a contract, awesome! History has shown though that hf valuations are usually way way higher than what is actually paid during trades.

I kinda wonder if Tampa doesn't have to protect Callahan, which might force Las Vegas to choose him because he's an aggressive forward that other teams hate to play against, and he'll help them hit the cap minimum.

How would his NMC differ in a such a way to allow that?

Love to get him on the Blues, but we have no cheap assets that would help
