OT: TV Movie Thread Part Iii

First one was quite good. The franchise almost literally right after that decided to be action-driven instead of suspense.

I enjoyed it more than the final Bond. It's crazy when you think about it that Cruise has been Ethan Hunt for 30 years, twice as long as Daniel Craig was Bond. The latter was always a mostly dour exercise while this movie (and most of the McQuarrie MIs) was fun and made you enjoy being there. I didn't see it on IMAX but probably the best way to experience it for the two major set pieces, the submarine dive and the biplane dogfight.

I miss Ilsa. People say that the Hunt character loves his wife the most. I think he truly loves Elsa. Grace is an ok character, but Hunt's attraction to her is head-scratching even if he's got a thing for damsels in distress.

I haven’t seen the new one, but I thought Ethan had more chemistry in scenes with Alanna compared to Grace. Vanessa Kirby seems like she’s having a blast anytime she’s on screen in the MI movies she’s in.

Agreed. She's great as a femme fatale. She's gonna be Sue Storm in the upcoming Fantastic Four: First Steps.

Last night while the Knicks and Mets destroyed me, I re-watched MI Rogue Nation and Fallout because at least Rebecca Furguson cheers me up. I was surprised to find out she also did a lot of her own stunts. My love continues to grow.

One major difference between the recent movies and the first couple is the soundtrack. It is vastly superior.
That goofy Danny Elfman soundtrack in the first MI movie made it cheesy especially during action scenes. It reminded me of Spielberg (in a bad way..not Jaws about to eat someone, but more like Cruise is fighting off a helicopter in the tunnel, but I expect ET to fly by in a bike).

I always ask: does a soundtrack improve the movie? For some movies, it's neutral. For some movies like Interstellar, it adds a lot. Rogue Nation/Fallout? I think it helps. Mission Impossible 1? I think it hurts the film.

Watching the Fall Guy. It has some cool 80s music but they must have bought the rights to 1 cool Kiss song. They have played it 3 times already and the movie still has 30 minutes to run ☺️

Edit: Just played it again lol 😂

Edit #2 just played it for the 5th time ☺️

Star Trek II is an all time movie by the writing, acting, and action but if you've seen it you know how James Horner's score augments all the scenes.

I mean yeah of course a great soundtrack improves a film but if your idea of a great soundtrack is that goober Hans Zimmer I don’t even know what to make of that.

Outside of The Thin Red Line and True Romance he is so spotty.

Horner
Elfman
Williams
RZA
Zimmer

Aesop Rock when he's dabbled in film. Yo La Tengo also did a really nice film score back in the day.

I didn't say anything about the Lion King, Rain Man, or anything else in Zimmer's discography. I only mentioned Interstellar specifically.

If you don't think Interstellar is a good soundtrack, then rather some snooty response like yours, I'll just say, whatever.

I don’t hate him, but he has an inflated reputation. He phones so much in. Time from Inception is pretty much an update of Journey to the Line. He was gifted the sequel to Blade Runner, and did nothing of note with it. Big shoes to fill but at least try a leg.

With Zimmer I usually like one track in a score (Dunkirk’s end titles, Day One from Interstellar, Honor Him from Gladiator) but he’s just very inconsistent. I just don’t get why people glaze him.

I probably blame him too much for every film trailer being unbearable with the klaxon being used so absurdly despite him not being responsible for the silly ones.

Zimmer has some fantastic soundtracks.

The fact that it's not your taste doesn't make them "spotty", it means your taste is different than others.

Man of Steel is one of my favorite soundtracks of all time. Is it musical genius? No, but I really like it and what it adds to the film.

Started Succession. I'm eight episodes in and... I'll just politely call it mediocre.

My biggest complaint isn't the characters or subject matter. It is that the show is boring as all hell. Maybe something major happens very soon that takes the show from boring to exciting but, yeah.
My GF loves this show & was begging me to watch it with her...I couldn't make it through 2 episodes. Not one character I could remotely relate to or root for. Thanks, but no.

My favorite over Hans Zimmer is Max Richter, do you have a personal favorite alternative?

Active dudes I would have to probably say Nick Cave and Warren Ellis consistently produce great scores - The Proposition, Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, The Road, and Hell or High Water were all great.

Jed Kurzel is up there, too. Alien Covenant was really good but his MacBeth was maybe my favorite score of the past decade (Antonio Pinto’s Maradona doc is second).

John Murphy with the 28 days / weeks and Sunshine is good, too. I think he has this new Superman so hopefully it’s good.

Michael Nyman isn’t very active in the thmovie world but when he does get a job it’s always pretty great (Gattaca).

Ryuchi Sakamoto also always worth it - The Revenant was great.

Johan Johansson unfortunately died. Sicario was so good and really important to the tone of that movie.

I’ll have to check out more of his work. I really liked Hostiles as a film and need to listen to it again as I haven’t seen it in a while.
I'd recommend you start with The Leftovers - the soundtrack is the perfect match to the theme of the mini-series. My Brilliant Friend is great too.
