Cub camp on Prime is really good.
It is about a couple that takes in bear cubs and gets them ready to re-introduce into the wild.

Welcome to Wrexham season 4 just dropped on Disney +. I am fascinated by this series as a sports fan, a business of sport fan, but mostly as a case study in brand building to drive enterprise value.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney purchased Wrexham FC back in 2021 for 2 million pounds in what could generously be called a distressed asset sale. As of today the club is estimated to be worth between 100-150 million pounds on a current annualized revenue of approximately 27 million pounds (not profit that is revenue). My guess is they will drive the enterprise value to well over a billion pounds in the next 5 years.

If you want a master class in modern brand building this is it. It could be a gross oversimplification to think an A list celeb just got behind this and presto away you go. Right from the idea by Rob through to today has been chalked full of great lessons. They took a shit club and had a pretty clear vision of where he wanted to take the team and how. Most importantly they have over invested in key human resource talent early. They have these hires where it is the right persons on the bus that is grossly overqualified for the job all with an eye to growing the enterprise. Shaun Harvey as an advisor and Phil Parkinson as the manager early on were very critical. Interesting now though is Season 4 they are transitioning to heavier hitters in the CEO role to try to get the off field offering caught up to the rise of the on field product. That is kind of where it is starting off in season 4.

I could go way further down this rabbit hole but I am blown away by how Ryan and Rob are growing this brand.

A fellow soccer parent recommended it and I got caught up last spring

I see a parallel with how the town has changed since the team's return to relevancy and some of the things TN is doing in downtown Winnipeg since the return of the Jets

What they've achieved there is pretty spectacular

I am just on episode 1 of season 4 and I am really impressed with how relentless they are to top grade. Bringing in a new CEO while you are achieving such success on the pitch is clearly a move by guys who remain a few steps ahead. Listening to Michael Williamson address the Wrexham group about growing out the infrastructure now to catch up to the team was cool. Clearly they have a path.

I heard Humphrey Ker on a podcast recap that R & R had brought on one new deep pocketed minority owner and he foreshadowed that they might need to bring on a larger majority owner when if they enter the Premier league. Really impressive to watch a vision come to life with action steps.

Yeah, they're playing with the big boys now. Every club's ownership in the Premier League is worth $1B+, and many are worth much more than that

I think them getting to the Premier League is an extremely tall task. The jump from League 1 to the Championship is massive, almost the same as from the Championship to the Premier League. If Wrexham stay up this season it'll be a success.

It also seems like there's a tier of teams that are constantly swapping between the two leagues

Leicester City, Leeds, Southampton, Burnley...

Crazy how football leagues punish the shitty teams with relegation, but North American sports leagues reward them with high draft picks

They're rewarded with massive TV rights payments that allow them to continue to yo-yo between the EPL and Championship. Even finishing in last place gets you big money. Last yeah Sheffield United were dead last by a mile and were given 105 million pounds.

Is anyone else watching Mobland?

I have never hoped for an old lady to get shot in the face before that show lol

Great cast including Tom Hardy and Pierce Brosnan

I am really enjoying it. I agree with your sentiment and her Grandson also needs to be tortured for a bit before he gets knocked off too.

However as we know from pro wrestling a heels job is to draw heat to drive asses into the seats. By that standard I say pretty good writing and acting by those two.

Yea I feel they might have made the jump to Championship one or two seasons too early but we’ll see.

Parts I am most curious about on the business of sport side are.

Once they expand their stadium to 30 thousand plus seats where do the fans come from to fill it? Is the economy in the area and the population robust enough to fill those seats when they are mid tier and the honeymoon wears off?

If Rob and Ryan need to bring in a really deep pocketed owner to live in the top tier they I assume that owner will want to be the owner. RARELY if ever does a founder with the original vision ever survive long in an enterprise where they are swallowed up by big money. It won’t be their vision anymore most likely (See Cuban…..Mark).

Is there a good place to gain information on the business side of this venture or football in general ?

I was pretty fascinated to hear Williamson say the bulk of their growth will be in America and that is a good teaser but what does that mean? What is the path for monetization of the international brand. Clearly eyeballs lead to marketing lift, merch sales, but past that where is the money?

I love that I am getting pieces of the puzzle but I need more. Green Bay Packers obviously survive very nicely in the NFL in a tiny city but they only have to fill 10 or 11 home dates which is much more doable than filling 23 home dates plus Cup play? On the flip side they are mostly filling weekend dates which lend nicely to travel so they don’t have the Jets problem of filling the building on a freezing cold Tuesday night in January.

One of the big tells for me on their ambition is that (SPOILER ALERT) this season when they were on the zoom with Williamson and he laid out the slow vision of growth to promotion or the fast vision that might cost them 50 million pounds of losses the boys just said we need to go for it. That is a far cry from how much they agonized over small losses in season one. Yes there is allot of drama inserted into the series to drive suspense but the fact they were so comfortable going for the promotion tells me their is a “business case” for the path.

Anyways I am obviously hooked on the business side of this lol.

Edit. Ok I am starting to do my own deep dive on the business side of this. Huddle up and the Athletic both have more details to the business side of things.
