Should probably have been a penalty, but 3 games? The league just makes up whatever numbers they want

I also like how the Flyer standing there with his gloves off literally punching Tsyplakov as he was being held wasn’t penalized, methinks that also should have been a penalty

They should put it back in. It's a penalty in the NFL, no reason it shouldn't be in the NHL too
Not if the player’s carrying the ball as a runner though. The NFL/NCAA blindside rules are there to protect receivers in the act of a catch, or defenders vulnerable to blindside blocks.

Other than that, no, ballcarriers aren’t entitled to any protection from blindside hits, as long as the hit is otherwise legal (I.e., not targeting the head/neck area)

No issue with 3 games since the main point of contact was the head. Even if it was just due to poor timing.

Drives me nuts that McDavid didn't even get a fine for a direct and purposeful elbow to the head of an unsuspecting player without the puck.

DOPS is an absolute joke with consistency.

Friedman said he can't recall another case like the hit on Poehling where the on ice refs did a video review of a hit, deemed there to be no penalty at all, but then DOPS later handed out a decent sized suspension. Very unusual and controversial situation.

I assume the officials for the game will receive a reprimand of sorts.

Not sure what the league is compensating for in this decision. Asinine decision.

Great move by Tsyp towards a player with the puck making a move towards the goal. Unfortunate outcome. Hate to see the Flyer player or any player get hurt, but in all my years of playing, hockey is not a kind sport even when there is no intent to injure. Both players are about the same size so on some level, Poehling needs to protect himself.

Wasn’t predatory and I would expect Tysp to make that hit again every time.
Things have changed over the years though....league is taking head shots seriously, for the most part, as they should. I agree there was likely no intent to injure, but the execution was bad and resulted in a bad hit and suspension was warranted. I didn't see any explanation form the league, but if there was a determination of intent to injure, would have been more than 3 games .
