I've been listening to some of his post game shows recently with Pierre mcguire.

Tony talks way too much. He should just be a host and let mcguire do the talking.
Yeah, that's on his podcast, listen to him on his BPM dshow, it's atrocious. More screwing than content. Always singing as if people want to hear that shit.

With the iHeart radio app you can listen to any radio in Canada and I just use it to listen to Ottawa's TSN radio because it isn't complete ass like TSN 690.

Do they still have that McKenna guy? Or maybe it was someone else, but the dude was a complete moron, but massively egotistical for no reason.
Connor McKenna? He's the main force behind the morning show, which is, I think, their première program because it sure ain't Melnick's geriatric meandering porch conversation with his cronies when TSN 690 becomes a music station.

The less said about "Campbell versus Gallo," the better.

McKenna - insufferable as he is - is the best of the lot.

Might be him.

This was about few years ago. The dude was a pompous ass and his takes were terrible and acted like he was superior to everyone.

I think this dude was also more about soccer than hockey.

what do you all listen to about habs in english??

I tried 690 again this am, they get a Fig lover on to talk figs
and how NOW nostrils is the best goal scorer in the world, no kidding that is what he said
I turned it off

690 is habs not figs

Your dislike for Basu is something man.
A man with this much access should not be so bad at his job. He's a beat reporter who doesn't report beats, doesn't analyze, doesn't have anything to offer other than the most mundane PR-babble. I don't like people who squander opportunities.

I gave up on 690 a long time ago. I don't know when was the last time I tuned in. If I'l listen to anything Habs-related in English, it's mostly podcasts. Marinaro's podcast, much to the dismay of @Rehab, Basu and Godin. I'll catch Eyes on the Prize and Locked on Canadiens, but I'll listen to those from time to time. I'll also catch McCagg's podcast because they mostly talk about the prospects (both Habs prospects and draft-eligible prospects).

Basu and godin pod is great, on the french side I really like tellement hockey with godin, martin leclerc and alexandre gascon

French I also like Processus (Brunet & Snake). I like their chemistry and I love how Brunet, in his deadpan humor tone, makes fun of Boisvert. And I've been meaning to catch episodes of Le Radar, which is a 32 Thoughts type podcast in French with Desaulniers and LeBrun.

Also in recent weeks, Marinaro has started a French version of his Sick Podcast, which is recorded once a week every Friday.

How often do you read his work? And what writer do you like on the team? Basu is still better than 80% of what's out there for ANY hockey reporter. I don't go to him for analysis, he'll be the first one to admit that's not his forte. The players and management seem to respect him whenever he asks a question so it sounds like you're selling him short.

Basu is also the only one who traveled to Finland years ago to spend a few days with KK and his family to do a feature on him. And he did the same thing last year when he went to Switzerland to do a feature on Reinbacher.

I used to subscribe to the Athletic until it expired in 2022. I devoured everything Habs. I found him to be terrible.

He does PR, not sports journalism; even though the two topics are pretty close, they are not the same.

He did a bunch of fluffing for Kotkaniemi one summer, he did the same for Bergevin and his "re-tool" if you remember the "more darts for the dartboard" discourse. I asked him in the comment section "If they're insisting that they've changed their draft strategy, what did they say they changed and what did they get wrong previously?" no response. Not that I was expecting a response but that's the difference between a journalist and a PR agent -- Apron didn't think to prod and ask about the latest slogan from the Habs. Just like Character, just like Attitude. Arpon just diligently repeats what he's told to repeat because he wants to be their friend and wants to keep his job since he's seen so many colleagues lose their jobs. He's pointless. And I don't think all the players and managers respect him, Bergevin certainly didn't.

I dislike Eric Engels as well but he's marginally better at talking about hockey. Arpon doesn't seem like he has much of a clue about the game on the ice.

A good sports reporter either gives insight that fans cannot get (due to proximity and access) or he has a good way of describing what we're watching happen on TV. Arpon does neither, he has no scoops, no insight, no interesting exclusives. He just fills the air.

Kenzie makes him better lol

He became Kotkaniemi's best friend... and was completely blindsided by KK's offersheet, KK's problems with the Habs, and anything to do with KK. Seems like a one-off PR affair rather than a journalist and player making a connection.

Yes also like processus, if you are interested in prospect oriented stuff on the french side I recommend Tout Sur Le Hockey pod and La Relève which is hosted by the host of Le Radar.

More often than not we would hear about new hires or insights when new management came on board via his weekly wrote up piece with Godin. He also does multiple trips a year to learn more about what makes these players tick or find out about their background. I guess you just don't like those pieces. His work on The Athletic rarely leaves me going "gulp well that was pointless". There are different schools of thought for journalism. There are some who do opinion pieces and there are who simply report the facts or try to see the forest among the trees and I think Basu is good at that. Getting a quote from someone and putting it into perspective to tell a story of progress, need to correct a certain facet etc. If you want analysis there are better resources out there.

Basu will do opinion pieces from time to time where he'll offer insight or make educated guesses and these have aged fairly well. At the end of the day, no management will use the media as a mouth piece or feed them scoops. FWIW I find Engels is a lot more guilty of what you criticize Basu for (regurgitating what management says and being a cheerleader).
