On the 690 post-game show, they were saying Demidov is the most hyped Habs prospect since Guy Lafleur.
Couple of thoughts, when did social media become huge, mid 1990's? Anyway, the hype for Doug Wickenheiser was huge and it buried him. Guy Lafleur used to say he was only expected to replace Jean Beliveau when he joined the Habs. It took him years to find his way in the NHL and he was surrounded by Hall of Famers. Was part of a Cup team his second season. Wick was only expected to take the flambeau from #10 and the Habs were in decline by the time he joined the team. It was too much for him.
I just hope that Demidov is allowed to progress at his pace, whatever that is, and he isn't buried by the hype that Wick had. He'll have a lot of adjustments to make not just new team, new league. Off ice, travel, culture. Hope for the kid's sake he's given the space by all to learn & develop
I think one difference is Jean directly followed the Rocket. Lafleur directly followed Jean. And Wickenhiser directly followed Lafleur. (Even if there's some overlap)
Let's just take Lafleur from when he last played on the habs. That's over 40 years ago. I don't think the pressure is as great personally because we are so far removed from Habs greatness whereas each player had to live up to the previous era.
The only player in the last 20 years that had that kind of pressure was probably Carey Price to full the shoes of Patrick Roy. As for demidov, the pressure will still be huge but that's part and parcel with being on the habs
