"While American viewership for Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final on Saturday night was somewhat middling, it was a somewhat different story north of the border.

A strong showing in Canada propelled Game 1 to 7.1 million North American viewers per the NHL, the most-watched Stanley Cup Final Game 1 since 2019, and an increase of 43 percent overall from last year."

Canadian fans are just lying in these polls.

Cant speak for all of Canada but here in Van, almost everyone i know through the hockey community ( beer league, coaching, friends etc) are not watching the games at all. They might tune in to Sportcentre at the end of the night to see the score and highlights but thats about it. Summer weather is here with plenty of things to do and its hard to convince people to watch a game that their team is not playing in.

And the viewership data shows that's totally fake news.

better name of the thread

" We at tsn don't get many views " They gotta learn that many people are watching on the Internet for free

They poll'd people , you're talking about network viewership which can be more inaccurate as alot of their numbers are counted by the TV just being on in the background while people are doing whatever else in their homes.

For someone that lives in Toronto I am not surprised. Most Leafs fans only watch the Leafs. They are Leafs fans first and hockey fans second and many can be classed as not really watching any other hockey at all.

If Canadians are lying in the poll, it seems that they're lying about watching when they're not, because 4 million Canadian viewers is only 10% of Canadians.

42% of Canadians following the finals is obviously a giant number and the viewership will not be half of that, but you do not need those 17 millions people to be actually watching, most of that 42% are just looking at the scores and highlight.

It is indeed ridiculous:
Only a quarter of Americans (27 per cent) will be following the series,

only 90 millions Americans will be following the series, only ? Do they think that the people that accepted to answer this were representative, and that 90 millions Americans following hockey should be seen as a low amount ?

Especially considering how multicultural it is. A lot of cultures follow other sports like cricket, rugby, etc. a heck of a lot more (not saying they don't watch hockey, but usually people tend to stick to one sport to watch).
Hockey is the number one sport in Finland too and if we got 42% of us watching or even following the Liiga finals that would be insane.

This just seems like a bitter Canuck fan post grasping on straws.

People have better shit to do.

The playoffs last too f***ing long. No reason for the SCF to start as late as it did.

EDIT: Also, 42 per cent ish means there are about 16 million Canadians paying attention AND THAT'S A LOT!!!!

About 15 million watched the 2014 Gold Medal game and that was considered historic.

Framing that fact 2 in 5 Canadians is watching as a bad thing is just classic, bad sports journalism. I always hated sports reporters when I was in the biz.

Pretty certain the 40% that is watching are Albertans. The East coast and BC aren't watching.
Not 40% of people would be watching, 40% would be just following who won in the news.
Following really closely was down to 19% according to the pool.

Actually watching all the game would be under that level (has that more than following really closely). Viewership will probably be what around 5 millions max, people that will have seen most of all the games, 3M ? (7.5%)
