It's really easy....
Option 1.... Richards returns to form... and goes back to center
Option 2.... Richards doesn't and gets bought out or traded... deadline or next summer.
Keeping Richards at 4C and playing with guys like Lewis/Clifford is a waste of what 5.8-0.5 (andy) so 5.3M and will not happen for long.
Carter is going back to wing unless Richards is traded. Kopi/Carter/Stoll/Richards is over kill.
Trading Richards leaves the question if one of Kopi/Carter/Stoll gets injured... who fills in for them? Good to have an extra top 6 center playing wing in case of injury.
Richards does not play well with Williams... Williams game is about finding rebounds and getting dirty goals around the net. Richards is used to trying to pass to Carter who is looking for a spot to shoot from. The 2 do not work together. Also do you really want to put Williams turnovers with a guy that was struggling defensively last year?
Sandpaper is overrated. The reason you put Toffoli on the top line is because he can make a pass. This comes in very handy when guys like Kopi/Gaborki can get someone passing to them so they can shoot. Something Brown can't provide. Or even Pearson or Carter with Kopi/Gabby
It's about balance.... when the Kings were running King/Kopi/Lewis other teams could target Richards and put him up against their best lines... with next year the line being something like
Gaby/Kopi/Toffoli
Pearson/Richards/Carter
Brown/Stoll/Williams
The offense will be there so teams will be more worried about Kopi/Gaborik destroying them, less able to key in on Richards. Also not being one of the worst teams in scoring next year allows an occasional bad goal without losing a shootout to Buffalo. Of course we need to see what Sutter does. Does he learn from what he had to do in the playoffs last year or does he go right back to a set up with one of the worst offenses in the league.
