is a huge risk and a ton of money to leave on the table as a professional athlete

It's not a ton of money unless thing go horribly bad. So no, it's not huge.


There is quite a bit of upside if: The cap rises, if the trend of the upper end players getting more money with the mid to lower tier players getting less, getting another contract in his prime and getting his choice of teams as a UFA. This all makes sense if he wants out.
