Player Discussion Tristan Luneau

"This guy looks great in the AHL and is developing nicely. Lets bring him up to the NHL level where he will be coached by a guy that everyone thinks is a terrible developer." :sarcasm:

Seriously though, bringing him up to the NHL has no upside. It means more kids are splitting time on the 3rd pairing in the NHL instead of playing a lot of minutes in a the AHL (AHL doesnt track TOI so I can't actually be sure).

There isn't a spot for Luneau on the NHL roster right now, unless we want one of LaCombe/Minty/Zellweger having to be a defense first guy......which would be a stupid thing to do (see LaCombe last season). Dumo getting traded should mean that those three guys are every day NHL players the rest of the season and Luneau can continue to develop in San Diego.

For once we can actually let a guy develop in the AHL instead of rushing him through to the NHL, so hopefully we actually do that.

I agree with this assessment.. I still think they trade Zellweger,. He seems to be struggling against the big bodies of the NHL... Not to sure PV is going to hold on to him.

Ehhh some teams like the offensively talented defensemen. All I'm saying is we got to many of them. And zellweger is the smallest of the bunch

Agree that Zellweger gets moved.

Eventually the left side will have LaCombe, Mintyukov, and Solberg.

The right side will probably have Luneau, surprisingly Helleson, and a top 4 RHD (where have I heard that before?).

Replacing Zellweger with Solberg will be a 180 as night and day.

Let's let our players cook some more before willingly want to trade them. It was just last season that a majority of this board wanted LaCombe traded b/c he had no value compared to Minty, Zell, and Luneau.

Luneau is similar to the other two OFD's from the CHL in Minty and Zell such that they're great offensively, but that defense needs a lot of work. Minty has a year of NHL experience under his belt and Zell had 26 NHL games last year. Minty and Zell are still struggling with the defensive aspect at the NHL level. Luneau just got his 26 AHL games this season.

You're partially correct about risky to play a young pair b/c if it doesn't include LaCombe. Last year, Minty-LaCombe was a good combo, albeit for seven games.

I dunno about Cronin thinking it's too risky to play a "young guy" pair. When Fowler went down to injury, we were forced to have a "young guy" pair with LaCombe-Zell at game 14. In game 16 was when Helleson was inserted into the lineup because Vaak fell to injury. This lasted until game 23, vs Ottawa. Afterwards, Fowler came back from injury.

In those 10 games with LaCombe-Zell, the team went 6-3-1 (13 points).

Minty-Gudas
LaCombe-Zell
Dumo-Helleson

The problem with the "young pair" is that LaCombe won't be part of it. We've tried the young pair before with Zell-Helleson or Minty-Zell and it didn't work out right. That was when Dumo-Trouba were our 2nd pair and LaCombe-Gudas our top pair. LaCombe would have to be with one of the youth D to work, but that would also put LaCombe into a non-top pairing role to help shelter the youth. That's bad for us b/c LaCombe is our best defenseman and has been playing a top-pairing role since Fowler was traded. Plus, I don't think Minty or Zell can carry Gudas like LaCombe has been.

Don't really see LaCombe as a "young guy" as he is 24 and had 4 years at Minnesota. One good thing Cronin has done this season is pairing LaCombe with a stay at home Gudas and allowing him to roam and attack. Last season being stapled to Fowler he was stuck in the D zone a lot and constantly defending. That isn't his game and that pairing was horrible.

Is it really so terrible that we hang on to our young dmen until we actually know what we have with them?

It’s not like this is a situation where they’ve gone AWOL in the playoffs multiple years in a row or anything. For now I’d rather just hang on to them and try to figure their chemistry out until things become clearer. We need as many chances at developing a no.1 defender as possible

Theodore was purely us being f***ed by the new rules to make expansions teams more competitive. Didn’t have years to plan with NMC players and such. Coming off a WCF loss.

The wins were 31 / Kesler and Eaves 32. Raks / silf / cogs for dogs were 23 / 26 / 29.
We also had 21 year old kase and Ritchie … 24 year old etem.

Lincoln 23 / Fowler, manson, and Sami all 25, Montour 22 / stoners $3 mil contract killing us and beiska unwilling to move his NMC.

My cousin is a tbirds fan so I have a Theodore tbirds jersey and loved him, and hated the trade at the time.

Looking back on it, I see why it happened, and understand even if I still don’t like it.

Montour must have been a drunk bender, because he was coming back to the bench to coach.

Edit: I say all this to say, we won’t be moving prospects currently playing in the NHL for cap dumps and none NHL talent. We will be trading for legit NHL players. So should be closer to win win

Didn’t he state he wants his prospects to “cook” or “marinate”? I think this has been subjective based on prospects treatment, but I also still can’t remember all the Junior/AHL rules verse overseas/AHL rules and also not being eligible for waivers.
 
For all of you saying we shouldn’t trade one of our current roster nhl young d + leave Luneau to cook again next season with the gulls. 1. Before his blood clot, he was on track to playing the rest of that season in the minors and probably being a full time
NHL player this season ( he did need more time, us not rushing him made helleson into a fringe dude that was never going to sniff our lineup . To at the very least a nice trade chip 2. Verbeek said he could tradedrysdale because he had lunuea who he’s very high on
3. Lunuea now is hitting his stride hard with the gulls
4. You don’t send back down again next season. That’s how young kids like cutter guautier demand trades because they feel overlooked/lied too
5. I remember verbeek saying that Luneau was on the fast track for this season. The blood clot happened, he needed to grow in the ahl more. He has. Now he’s coming up next season or even eoy and that’s life. He’s younger, he has more upside than someone like helleson and between zell and Luneau , Luneau is right handed and heavier/taller. While zell might hold more current trade value given hes more ready to fill a top 4 roll on an nhl team.and the ducks can again trade from a position of strength on zell as part of a package for a slam dunk top6 winger

Theodore was a mistake we put ourselves into. He stepped up right away with Vegas.

Mountour is not the same situation. He didn’t do much in Buffalo and other than the breakout season in Florida he hasn’t hit 40 points.

I would have kept him as he is still a good player. But let’s not kid ourselves that he was a year away from being a top Dman in the league when we moved him.

Luneau's offense has recently taken a rise in the AHL, but not his defense, as people who watch the Gulls have reported (see the San Diego Gulls thread). Luneau is further behind development from Minty and Zell.

This year, the org is trying to develop Minty's defense more than Zell. Minty is struggling with it. Anaheim did also try this with Luneau to start the season and he couldn't play defense very well. If the team is trying to develop Luneau into a two-way D, then his defense needs to be better to dominant in the AHL. Otherwise, he may continue to struggle at the NHL level. We have Gudas and Trouba on the right side for our top-2RD's. The Ducks can afford to keep Luneau in a top-4 pairing in the AHL, instead of possibly putting him into a 3rd pairing youth rotation in the NHL.

I don’t argue that we can “ afford to keep him down there” the question is will they? I’m not so sure.
