So he ends up playing about 13 games total this season, if he's really being shut down. What a waste.

I know there was a report he returned to skating on the ice, but there's gotta be something more than precaution if the org wants to shut him down for the rest of the year. What other info on his injury has caused this action?

It's a sad outcome for Luneau. It's gonna be difficult to project him on the NHL roster to start the next season. That means we are down two NHL RD roster spots for next season with the trading away of Drysdale and now Luneau's complications.

Unlikely to see Tristan Luneau with the Tigers

Due to his medical condition, the chances are slim of seeing Tristan Luneau with the Victoriaville Tigres.

According to the Anaheim Ducks medical team, the season of the right-handed defenseman, who celebrated his 20th birthday on January 12, could well be over. This was made known by Ducks general manager Pat Verbeek during a call with Tigers general manager Kevin Cloutier.

Luneau, victim of an infection, did not start skating again. However, he has started training in the gym again and is continuing his rehabilitation. His situation is considered stable. During the All-Star game break in the National Hockey League, Luneau even trained with Noah Warren at the Colisée Desjardins and attended the game between the Tigres and the Drummondville Voltigeurs.

“The chances of seeing him with us are slim, but the door is not completely closed. If he puts on his skates again this season, it will be with the Tigers,” mentioned Kevin Cloutier.

To obtain his services from the Gatineau Olympics, the GM of the Tigres gave up a conditional fifth round pick in 2024. A 2025 fifth round pick from the Olympics will return to the Tigres if Luneau does not put on the uniform of the Victoriaville team. Ducks management can send him back no later than March 8.

This season, before ending up in the infirmary, Tristan Luneau played seven games with the Ducks, collecting one goal and two assists. He also played with the American Hockey League's farm club, the San Diego Gulls, where he recorded two assists in six games.

Any news since February? Do we think he'll play next year?
IIRC he should had been ready to skate near the end of the season, we just did not want to rush him.

So fully expecting him to play, but I'm cautious on the impact of these injuries. He looked great last year. Now his competition is Gudas, the offseason's expected RHD addition, and someone like Lindstrom (I hope we resign him). I guess also Zellweger and LaCombe on their off sides which I'd guess is not anyone's preferred option.

I wouldn't rule out at least a stint in San Diego.

It was mentioned during the reporting on the exit interviews that Luneau was in Anaheim skating with a bunch of Ducks who were still doing on-the-ice stuff around that time. He'll probably be ready to go next season.

Would he qualify for the rookie camp?
It's probably better to get him on the ice, even if it's a friendly scrimmage

I actually don't mind either one playing RD, tbh. They've played RD in the lower levels in their hockey career. At AHL/NHL level, they have to adjust to the speed, new coaches, new schemes, physicality, etc...

After the first 20 games, LaCombe continued to settle into the NHL better and better. His offense also started kicking up. Throughout the season, LaCombe would be playing both sides.

Minty stayed on the same side, but once he got thrusted into a top-4 role his defense got exposed. That's to be expected out of rookies. He also got injured and probably a factor in his play. In a Ducks Stream interview along with Carlsson, both admitted it was their first time playing through injuries.

Minty-LaCombe looked good as a 2nd pairing, albeit a seven game small sample. It also helps to know they're roommates and probably had that chemistry already going. That's LaCombe playing RD.

Zell played RD upon his second call up. That offense is real, but he does need to work on his defense. Then again, he's doing it as a 1st pairing as a rookie.

Anaheim loves throwing up rookie D-men into 1st pairing roles as all four rookies played top pairing roles in Minty with Gudas, Luneau with Fowler, LaCombe with Fowler, and Zell with Fowler.

I recall Verbeek saying he prefers overripen prospects.
