Ok so lets say Brodeur was named the head coach for team Canada (huge if, just stay with me) and they won the WHC does that mean hes a member of the triple gold club even though he won the WHC as coach.

I thought the rule is you have to have won the Stanley cup, WHC and the Olympics. I only used Brodeur as an example since he was the only guy i could think of who would fit these criteria.

oh, so you have to win either all three titles as a coach or a player exclusivly. seeing as how Babcock is a member of the triple gold club.

Wait?

People care about the WHC?

Wouldn't it mean more with the World Cup/Canada Cup?

WHC isn't exactly hockey played at its highest level.

And those are gimmick tourneys. At least the WC is. Not sure what your point is.

The Stanley Cup and the Olympics are the 2 big events, nothing else is very close. The WHC just isn't as prestigious as the other 2. But the WC or Canada Cup aren't as prestigious as the Olympics either, in large part due to the one-off nature of those tournaments (not every year or every 4 years). The triple gold club is cool, but it is kind of strange since their are 2 trophies that are far above the 3rd one in the group.

How is World Cup a gimmick?

It's a legitimate best-on-best tournament.

WHC is a consolation/developmental tournament where a handful of NHLers go if they feel like it.

:/

It is best on best (with the possible exception of the up-coming WC with gimmicky teams), but it is also kind of random. It's hard to put those tournaments up there with the Olympics and SC because of the lack of history, consistency in tournament name, format, year, etc. Triple gold club is bit of a stretch in my mind due to the discrepancy between the SC, Olympics and any other tournaments.

I agree with you, I also don't like that players not from one of hockey's great powers have little chance to join it no matter how great they play, as they likely will never win the Olympics.

For sure, and same with players who played before the NHL allowed players to go to the Olympics.

The ASG is also best on best. Doesn't make it any less gimmicky.

The World Cup includes a team leftovers and a team with age restriction. Doesn't get more laughable than this as a concept for international tournaments.

Oh, I forgot. It's a promo tourney for the NHL, nothing of international significance.

Don't get me wrong, the WHC isn't significant either. But if I had to choose between a gimmick and a tournament that isn't best on best (actually, most top teams can still ice very good rosters) I wouldn't choose the gimmick.
