Player Discussion Trevor Zegras : Part III

not sure why you expect him to ask for some ridiculous price
Hes not worth the 5.75 he makes now. If he puts up 60pts, he will probably want a long term deal in the 9avg a year with the way the Cap trend is moving. He would have to play the game a lot better in many aspects to even consider that at 80+pts.
He would need to show us something we haven't seen yet. I dont believe he has it.

I disagree that he’s not worth what he makes now. But i also think it’s far fetched to think he’ll ask for 9mil+ if he only puts up 60 points. Seems like worrying about something that might not happen just to have an excuse to trade him.

The team won’t want to give him a 2 year contract right into feee agency, and he can ask for arbitration that walks him right to free agency sooner.

So, it’s either a long term contract, or a trade. Trading him when he has UFA coming up doesn’t help his trade value.

I don’t see a problem with 2 years and pending UFA.

As for arbitration, that might be the worst move by Zegras.

I think there would a lot of GMs who would have to wonder the sequence of holding out, a couple of bad years. Contract year and a bounce back. Go to arbitration.

And if the bad years are the coach’s fault, you better hope you have a coach that Zegras can play for.

No one is going to give Zegras a long term contract after one bounce back good year. Verbeek won’t.

I’d rather keep Zegras with another short term show me than have him moved.

I hope he isn't traded. What i took from Pat's comments is that he wants to give him 1 more shot with a different coach - This is probably his last chance tho.

I still think there's a lot of potential there but he absolutely needs to make himself stronger and faster. I can't imagine his value is even that high right now so might as well just see what he can do. But if there's a trade that makes sense, I could see Pat moving him. What i'm confident in is that we won't get screwed in a deal where we trade Zegs.

I am not understanding the concept of how lowballing a player and walking them to UFA makes that player have any loyalty to the franchise if they excel in their second “show me” contract. Especially with the reports in the agents survey on how Verbeek and company are absolute asshats when it comes to contracts.

Paying Zegras what he is currently getting for a couple more years isn’t lowballing.

I can’t imagine anyone offering 7x7, or more, after the last 2 years; even if next year is a bounce back. I couldn’t do that.

Even Terry’s 7x7 makes me cringe when he constantly skates himself into trouble.

He hasn’t played next year yet. The cap is going up exponentially. WAY too soon to be what he’s worth, and you aren’t answering why Zegras would not just walk away.

I still want them to keep him whether he returns to a 60 guy or goes higher to 70 points. Z and McTavish work very well together and believe both can be better defensively without sacrificing offense, just better utilizing of their skill sets and making less mistakes.
They should train together, McT noticeably got stronger since being drafted and his brother is an MMA fighter.

If Pat is set on trading him at least he can at least wait till he's back at around 60 point pace. They ain't getting much for him now so might as well wait.

Walk away to where?

Like you said next year hasn’t happened, but if it isn’t a real bounce back he has little value. I’m sure he would get signed somewhere.

As far as the cap going up, depending on how many of our kids hit, and hopefully a chance to bring in an elite player, that money might be better spent elsewhere.

If z is not playing here.. Hes moving to the east.. Boston or NY.. He always said he dreamed of playing in the east

I dont think he gets moved before the season either. I just dont see him a Duck after this one....

I feel like hes playing his way to get moved either way honestly.

And I remember the last contract wasnt a simple signing...

It wasn’t a literal location question. It was who is going to pay what he wants if he feels slighted by what the Ducks offer?

The Zegras argument has been Cronin ruined him and he’ll go somewhere else and become the high scoring exciting player he was when he came into the league.

Yeah it's hard to argue for a big raise if you have 2 down seasons, even if he bounces back to 60+.

And if he does, well the good news is he'll probably raise his trade value, so if the Ducks deem him unworthy of the financial risk, SOMEONE out there is always desperate enough for a skilled C to acquire him and pay him. If a team values him like that, they'll offer something good.

And if he struggles again, then so be it. At that point he might accept longet term at a lower salary just to secure what guaranteed money he can.

But I suspect the right coach will unlock him.

I think we all are in agreement and this upcoming year.. Zegras needs to prove his worth. Right now he is not worth 5.7 they are paying him

Any place he doesn’t feel like the organization has slighted him repeatedly over a 3-5 year period?

Any place that will let him play center?

Any place he has friends playing?

Any place that feels that 5M for a 60 point player has become an underpayment with the rapidly escalating cap structure, and would be a gross underpayment if he’s scoring significantly more than that ?

He’s looked like he’s angry and not having fun a lot. Plenty of players leave situations where they don’t feel valued.

Zegras has been the ducks "big draw" during these rebuild years, does anyone know if they post jersey sales by player? I'm mentioning this because during that time Zegras was vital (in a financial sense), but now with Leo, cutter, dostal, etc getting more name recognition I'm wondering if they will be more inclined to trade him now.
