Player Discussion Trevor Zegras : Part III

It will say a lot about this franchise if we decide to give up on a young, skilled, passionate fan favorite at his all time lowest value in favor of an obviously clueless coach and broken system. Maybe I shouldn't feel so strongly that way if I'm being totally objective, but I don't care.
Zegras was bringing in fans with his michigans and all. But that all dried up. The fans just want to see playoffs now. And sadly Z is just not a difference maker . I could see him being shipped out

Or he just needs to be utilized properly? We won't actually know until we have a competant coach. The fact that all his creativity dried up as soon as we got a new coach should be a clear sign. I would not at all be surprised if it came out that he was explicitly told not to do anything creative.

Btw, I think a lot, if not all, of our young guys are being adversely affected by coaching, but it makes sense that Zegras is the most affected given his strengths/playstyle.

Yeah team winning is more important than trying to pull off a cool trick like a Michigan goal.
Didn't trying to pull off the michigan lead to more turnovers or lower overall chance of the team scoring or am I remembering it wrong ?

The fact he hasn't gotten stronger/faster and how i've seen it commented that he looked like he was having a lot of fun with those Michigan goals has me wondering how serious is he about taking his game to the next level. They need players who want to win and part of that is getting stronger/faster.

Oh for sure. I'm all for bringing in a new coach and seeing how z does before trading him

Zegras has done or attempted to do everything asked of him over the last 2 years with mixed results and we're questioning his commitment and integrity? This is wild. To me, we have not put him in a position to succeed. The org seems to have determined that they can't win with the way he played that made him one of the most skilled and exciting prospects in the NHL and decided to turn him mold him into something else. Im not sayi g he doesnt need to learn to play a 200 ft game reliably but they have done nothing to build his confidence either.

Why hasn't he gotten stronger or faster then ?

If, based on the CBA, we have to offer Zegras a minimum of his current $5.75m per, regardless of how he plays next year, he will be gone if next year is like this year.

What I don’t know is if he is traded does that mean he has to be offered his current yearly salary by his new team when his contract expires. If that is the case, it really limits what teams would be interested in that cap hit if Zegras doesn’t turn it around.

I don’t know all the RFA rules on offer sheets; especially if Zegras can accept less than current.

I can not see a scenario where he is on this team after the deadline. Lets say that does happen though, no way will he be worth whatever astronomical number he will want next off season. ...

Let’s say he has 80 points and is healthy all year. That would be a very difficult trade to make. IF it happened, it would be a draft/offseason trade IMO.

Weird post. Not sure what leaves you too believe the number will be astronomical.

I think Verbeek only moves Zegras plus 9OA and whatever this Summer for a player PV really wants, not a filler vet.

This offseason is the most important one for Zegras. He comes in with basically a clean slate, but he also has to show he is ready to prove his worth.

If Zegras breaks out this year under the new coach, I think he stays. It will be a two year contract that is not ridiculous.

If things don’t improve he’ll be gone, especially if the new coach turns the Ducks into a playoff team. In this league you only get so many chances and every year a new crop of prospects show up.

Zegras will either get a long term contract or be traded. He’s going to be arbitration eligible after the current contract, and will want either to be taken care of or will force his own control.

I’m not sure he can do much to get a long term contract.

If he becomes strong on the puck, plays tough, and gets back to making decisive passes, and along with 60+ points then perhaps.

Today few people are disappointed he didn’t get 8x8 when he held out.

I could see Zegras getting moved back to center with a new coach. Probably 3C. But regardless of what happens, it is up to Zegras to make the most of this year.

If Cronin was still behind the bench I'd say it was 90% sure he was gone before next season but now I think I'd drop it to like 20%.

Hopefully he sees this as an opportunity for a fresh start and puts in work this off-season.

The team won’t want to give him a 2 year contract right into feee agency, and he can ask for arbitration that walks him right to free agency sooner.

So, it’s either a long term contract, or a trade. Trading him when he has UFA coming up doesn’t help his trade value.

Depends on who the coach is and when verbeek hires him. Bad sign for zegras if we go into mid-June and there is no coach named yet.
