Player Discussion Trevor Zegras : Part III

Which is fine. Not every pick is going to end up an impact 1st liner. You use a 9OA on a forward and get a 2nd liner, that's a perfectly good return. If that's all he is next year, his next contract will reflect that.
Yeah that's absolutely fine. I'm not thinking about this from a position of "God I hope the team can spend more for his services" but more from the reality that he and his agent will be fighting for a raise in two summers. If he wants it, he has to earn it next year.

I’m not certain Verbeek moves Zegras; unless there is a real falling out. He’ll be an RFA and has no leverage.

He probably won’t find a team to give him an offer sheet to pull him away from the Ducks. And arbitration is probably not going to go good for him unless he has a really good year.

The reality is 7x7 or 8x8 will probably never happen regardless of the cap.

Thinking of zegras next contract lately gives me headaches. We see him play night in and night out and he has a big hockey brain, but the numbers haven't clicked with his potential. I don't know what a fair deal would be. I could see 5m x 3yrs as a starting point. I would be hesitant to give him more than 6.5

I believe his QA has to be at least his current year salary, $5.75. He could sign a contract for less, but I'd be surprised if he did that.
I’d be surprised if Verbeek offers him $5.75m. And I’d be more surprised if Zegras held out again for more.

He had two 60+ point seasons and he looked to be trending upward back then.

Of course if he has a real breakout years next year, 70+ points, that changes things. But still a tough call based on 2023 contract and subsequent results.

John

Edit Added: Does the CBA mandate the minimum has to be $5.75m?

Yes as to the minimum QA being what his last year salary was. If you recall, a few years back some guys were negotiating multi year deals with a big jump up in the last year. It was for just that purpose.

I think with a year still to go a Z contract could take a lot of turns in either direction by then. I also think next year will likely be a turning point for making some tough personnel decisions.

My personal belief is that PV will try to package him in a deal for a high end top-6 FW. If he can, then someone else will figure out his nect contract.

I’ve thought about Zegras’ at times lackadaisical play and at this point in the season the number one priority is to not get hurt.

If they want to sit him for the last few games I’m fine with it. The last 2 seasons have been brutal for Trevor and we just need to keep him healthy.

I like Z a lot but I think he is perhaps given the benefit of the doubt a bit too much (people are too easy on him). We’ll know for sure with a better coach.

I actually still see flash in his game. To me his major limiting factors are strength, speed and physicality.
Yeah, this is my issue.

He simply has no better physical tools now than he did when he first entered the league. Hasn’t gotten faster, more powerful, etc even a little bit to me.

There was always an assumption that he would naturally fill out a little and get a touch more explosive, but what if he just hasn’t been able to do that and this is just kinda what he is?

In that case he’s a pretty mediocre 2nd liner who leaves you wanting more

To be clear, I think we should fire Cronin and see what Z can do under a new coach next season though before punting

I see the confidence and flash are almost completely absent. Dude appears neutered.
Neutered from the standpoint of never scoring because he’s stifled constantly.

I still see him making skilled plays and decisions pretty often. I just think it’s peculiar how other forwards and defensemen have still looked pretty good. Nobody is playing to their maximum point potential under Cronin but Zegras is still well behind the pack. And for me at least the guy is often just getting manhandled out there.

He doesn’t have the skill set of a winger. Fast to get in on the forecheck, no. Strong to win board battles, no. Able to live in the crease, no. Offensively, he’s a center. But our coach’s mind thinks defense.

Z getting benched when nobody else does for mistakes everyone else is making definitely is playing on his mind imo.

This is interesting because the players he gets compared with most consistently are mostly wingers (Patrick Kane, Artemi Panarin, Clayton Keller)

I’m not saying you’re wrong that he’s better at center and every player is different, it’s just interesting to bring up the skillset thing here.

He was bad in the early going, no doubt about it, largely due to injuries, confidence issues (pretty glaring IMO) and having to deal with the fact that he’s a target of opposing defenses now and without having any sort of elite athletic traits, so he’s had to figure out how to manipulate space for himself when it’s taken away (actual gap control? Whoever heard of such a thing!)

Scoring pace has ticked up over the last 20 to where he was in his first two seasons, he’s given me enough belief to think he’ll figure it out. Raw totals aren’t where you’d like for them to be, but I’m not really worried about the numbers; everyone’s stats are depressed in this garbage ass “system”
