Player Discussion Trevor Zegras : Part III

Sorry but I’m disappointed. The ducks need him to be a high end offensive player.

Sucking our thumbs about him when he’s at .49 PPG for the 2nd year in a row seems a little bit like we’ve capitulated

He’s varying levels of mediocre a lot of the time

As of right now, Cronin has ruined the Z we knew. I'm hoping that with the "old Z" coming back attitude-wise, maybe his offense will too.

I think it's a fit situation. There's no question Zegras needed accountability for his play and to focus on the defensive side of the game.

To his credit, both Zegras and Cronin believe he's improved in those areas and I would say there has been growth. At the same time, Cronin's system does not mesh with how Zegras wants to play. He's also center being forced to play wing.

Until there's a new coach, it's impossible to know how much is Zegras and how much is systems.

I know it's impossible to measure something like "vibes", but it absolutely seems to be night and day just on the bench during a game when Z is in lineup. Some guys just have that infectious energy that makes the daily drudgery of going to work a little less painful. He just seems to have fun when ever he is playing the game, and that shows in how he interacts with his team mates on ice, and on the bench.

I can't watch every game like I used to but in what I've seen it does seem like Zegras is improving as a 200 foot player. Problem is this team is sabotaging his trade value, he's gonna go to a team with a real system and shine again

Why would they trade him? It makes no sense. He is doing what the coach wants and we play way better with him in the team.

Why would we care if they're sabotaging his trade value? We want to keep him on the Ducks.

I don't think they're handling him the best, but hopefully he'll thrive in a system more conducive to his skillset. I don't care a whit what his trade value is since I don't think they plan to trade him.

He's got 5 points in 8 games since coming back, but it feels like it could be more if his teammates had better finish. There are always a few 'Grade A' scoring opportunities that he sets up for his linemates every game.

I hope after the Gudas Captain era is done, Z’s offense has come back and he survived being traded and is the next captain. We’re starting to see a more mature Z.
I love Z, I just don't see him ever being a captain. Not to go full parasocial but I think he would have a lot less fun having to be the one to crack down on people. I'd like to see him with an A eventually.

People say Terry but I actually think LaCombe is the next captain, assuming he maintains his level of play... They gave him an A during pre-season and he has the demeanor for it.

If Zegras goes before Cronin, I’m going full Raphael on this team. lol

Honestly, if Zegras is traded at all will be beyond upset. He has done everything Verbeek has asked of him even if it has sacrificed his offense.

If Z is traded and Cronin is still with the team at that time, I will actually be done with the Ducks. I have been a fan for 25+ years and that will be the last straw.

I say this as the biggest Z fanboy….. even if it was for Brady T or Tage T ?

Like if we acquire the best player in the deal and don’t have to give up multiple current NHL players, would that still upset you enough to quit on the franchise ?

I won’t be done with the Ducks but will not go out of my way to watch games for at least a season and just focus on the Rangers….even that team has not been as fun to watch lately.

This defense first mindset that Cronin preaches is a farce and not worth the sacrifice the offense has taken. Plus it’s been the goaltending keeping them in most games not the defense.

It’s an interesting story for me. When the Rangers traded Ryan Callahan I quit the team and organization for about a year. I overacted and it was a rash decision over a player that I regret.

I’ve learned you always have to put the team first before a player but with the Rangers it just wasn’t about the player trade there was more to it. It was getting very expensive for season tickets, I used to pay around 14k for a full season. A lot of games had to eat. Because hard to get people to come down to the city.

The fans also started to really turn me off and I needed a break from NYC hockey. It’s also one of the reasons I started to follow the Ducks more and become a fan about 10 years ago. It’s funny the Ducks probably saved me from quitting hockey altogether and HF boards as well.

I guess my point is a player trade or bad moves by a GM will not make me stop being a fan of a team but they will turn me off where I will not put as much time, effort, and money supporting them. That’s what I’m getting at.

The Rangers did it to me and I really hope the Ducks don’t do it now . But I will never have that overreaction again when a player gets traded. Oh I will be angry and will let it be known but when the dust settles will need to just move onto the next chapter.

Which goes to say it really also depends on the return . Loved the Drysdale trade and love Cutter, that was an excellent trade for the Ducks. So, I guess it really depends on the return but it has to be something big.

Btw I chose Leonardo87 because of Callahan , years ago. Leader in blue. Wears his heart on his sleeve. Also is my favorite ninja turtle. Lol. It’s funny how he was part of the broadcast team that Zegras scored his first Michigan and made headlines. Hockey gods can be funny sometimes.

You ask the hard questions, I respect that.

And to answer your first question: yeah probably. Z was the first really good forward on board for the rebuild and made the earlier dark years of the rebuild watchable just because of his antics and flash. Then captain dipshit rolls into town, somehow makes the hockey even LESS watchable, and then he somehow outlasts the heart-and-soul guy that everyone seems to love? No no no. Cro outlasting Z would be more of a symbolic kick to the face than anything, even if we get the better player coming back. My first thought would be how Cro would ruin the new player.
