Trent Frederic

Anyone that's ever had an ankle sprain is probably aware that they can be extremely painful and take a long time to fully heal, and are highly susceptible to reinjury. I wish him the best, but it would likely had been better if he suffered a small fracture.
Yes and no. We're basically just saying a minor injury is better than a moderate injury, but you don't exactly get to choose what you fracture, how severe it is, and how complicated it is with a trauma to the ankle. There's plenty of fractures in the ankle/foot/lower leg that you wouldn't want to get that may require surgery, months off, healing complications, etc. I'd take the sprain any day over rolling the dice on a fracture. At least with a high ankle sprain there are ways to tape, brace, or manage pain if you come back early that won't have any long term impacts on the ankle, whereas you often can't do the same (or at least shouldn't) with a fracture until it's actually healed. And I say "at least shouldn't" because hockey players play through injuries that they shouldn't in the playoffs quite often.

Really makes me wonder if Kane will play before the season ends and Ekholm will just sit out
Is that long enough for Ekholm to qualify for LTIR? I don't think it is which would mean they can't do that.

I think Kane being on the trip is just so that he can get more reps in actual lines and drills instead of just skating back in Edmonton without that exposure.

It would be wouldn't it? If it's 10 games and 24 days then I think that would take them right to the end of the season, no? I think it would be retroactive to when he last played.

You might be right. I was more posing the question hoping someone would clarify as I'm not sure the specifics on LTIR. If that's the case then that might not be a bad idea to get Ekholm healthy and Kane some reps if he's ready.

If they're taking morning skates does that mean they could play by next week? Really want to see Frederic and Kane in the lineup, these last couple of months have really dragged lol.
One of McDavid or Ekholm needs to go on LTIR for the cap to work

Having Ekholm as healthy as you can get him, and getting Frederic and Kane a few games is probably what makes the most sense. Ekholm isn't going to be rusty if he sits out the rest of the season, but you might see some chemistry issues with Frederic not getting a few regular season games, and a bit of rust in Kane. Luckily both players are kind of straight line players and imo there's less rust for those guys to knock off. They both play very simple games.
