Yes and no. We're basically just saying a minor injury is better than a moderate injury, but you don't exactly get to choose what you fracture, how severe it is, and how complicated it is with a trauma to the ankle. There's plenty of fractures in the ankle/foot/lower leg that you wouldn't want to get that may require surgery, months off, healing complications, etc. I'd take the sprain any day over rolling the dice on a fracture. At least with a high ankle sprain there are ways to tape, brace, or manage pain if you come back early that won't have any long term impacts on the ankle, whereas you often can't do the same (or at least shouldn't) with a fracture until it's actually healed. And I say "at least shouldn't" because hockey players play through injuries that they shouldn't in the playoffs quite often.Anyone that's ever had an ankle sprain is probably aware that they can be extremely painful and take a long time to fully heal, and are highly susceptible to reinjury. I wish him the best, but it would likely had been better if he suffered a small fracture.
