Value of: Trent Frederic on July 1

I think a lot hinges on how he does when he gets back for the Oilers down the stretch.

Based on the majority of his time on Boston, 4x4.5, even with a rising cap - is a monumental overpayment. You are talking about a depth forward who has never averaged more than 13-14 minutes per game over any full season. That’s a guy who at age 27, has never been deployed in anything above a third line role for an extended period. You aren’t getting some “middle six/top six” versatility baked in there on any proven level.

Now he’s certainly got traits - physicality, positional versatility and hitting UFA at a younger age - that will draw plenty of interest. And who knows, maybe he gets handcuffed to a top six line with McDavid or Drai down the stretch and playoffs and earns himself a big bump.

But from the record we have? I certainly don’t think he’s worth that 4.5 AAV ballpark even with the new financial climate.

There is a chance he never plays a game for the Oilers

I agree, however I feel like the rising cap will enable GMs to give out some really head scratching contracts, even more so than usual.

Just use watever you can of him in the playoffs. Then let him go. There are so many good , fast, young bucks in the league for 5 million or less. Go after a legit talent. Losing Holloway stings so hard.

I think he is getting a bit underrated after this rough season on what ended up being a bad Bruins team. Getting 15-20 5 on 5 goals from a 3rd liner isn’t something to scoff at. He potted more 5 on 5 goals the last two seasons than guys like Larkin, DeBrincat or Marchand and did it without the usage those guys get. But, obviously had a rough year this year.

I could see him shooting 28% these playoffs and Edmonton signing him to a 5x5 deal, but only because I fear Edmonton management will fail to ever build a real top team around McDavid + Draisaitl

In a more realistic scenario where he and/or Edmonton fizzles out in the playoffs, I could see something 2-4 yrs x 3-4m, depending on where he is willing to sign.

I could see him going to FLA to play with his childhood friend Matthew Tkachuk. FLA plays a style of hockey to that will pull out the best of him. When he first broke in the NHL, he would stir the pot. He can go to FLA for a few years, maybe win a cup and also build his value back up. Something in the 2yr/$3.5 million range makes sense to me.

Freddie is a nice kid and wish him well.

But any GM who pays him the kind of money discussed in this thread will in all likelihood regret it.

And fans will go on a roller coaster ride which includes excitement, happiness, and hope -- but ultimately ends with questions like "Wait, is the ride over? Do we get off now? Isn't there more?"

These are interesting questions as the cap is going up. I won't speculate, but whatever the new going rate for a gritty 3rd line winger is what he should get. It wouldn't shock me if someone pays him as a gritty 2nd line winger and regrets it though.

You win. All other GMs have bowed out.

Do it. You know you want to. Do it. Do it.

As an Oilers fan I hope this guy performs like a 3M winger in playoffs. Someone worthy of a 5M+ deal would be bonus for Oilers.
Not sure anyone expects him to be more than a 3rd line inconsistent LWer at this point.

Lol I hope they do.
People do realize in like 2 years 3rd liners will cost 5-6 mill, right ?

Dude hasn't been that good this year, but a team paying around that is likely to happen unless he goes for a 1/2 year deal betting on himself and then getting 6+
