I'm actually curious about how Trent sees his own game these days. Does he fancy himself a skilled forward now that is out there to score goals? He was a different player in the AHL and when he first came up, and I wonder if that was just him doing what he thought he needed to do to make the NHL but was never really the player he wanted to be. For a long time we heard certain people claim that the Bruins were "neutering" (LOL) their guys- Bruce, or Sweeney, or Monty or whoever. Kastelic doesn't appear neutered to me, so I guess it's Frederic wanting to be a different type of player. Unlike Brad, who reinvented himself to some extent (oh if Trent had Brad's drive), Trent doesn't seem to have the skill to play the game he seems to want to.

Or, you know, I am just full of shit here, which wouldn't be the first time in my life, but I really am curious as to what's happened with this guy.

He's struggling this year for sure, but I don't see him fancying himself anything or trying to be anything different than what he was. Think the disorganization and lack of results early has shaken his confidence and so he's hesitating just a little and it's snowballing (likely the case with just about every forward on the roster not named Kastellic).

He's always had a conservative approach as a forward and came up through just about every level as a defensive center and so he's leaning back on that as I see it. I don't see the "he's neutered" stuff either, the problem he runs into is that he thinks he needs a formally accepted invitation to initiate any rough stuff aside from a bump or grabbing a guy.

Do we have to?!
You don't

You're not totally wrong.
What we see may be a result of forcing players to play above their skill set in the lineup.
They are being asked to be something they are not and try new things to live up to the expectations, and end up abandoning the things they do well that got them to the NHL. So their overall play suffers.

I could be misremembering, but it feels like, rough stuff aside, that he is just a lot less engaged this season. I recall one play last night where he actually made his presence felt in a positive way when he got in on the forecheck and laid a solid hit and knocked the puck loose. The rest of the night he was MIA as has been the case most of the season. It could be confidence, but if he's just going to focus on being a defensive forward because that is shaken, I would still expect to see him affecting the game postiively in other ways besides scoring, and he generally isn't

I mean he's for sure struggling, but its hard to look at last night's game and say focusing on being a defensive forward didn't affect the game positively when the team gave up 15 shots the entire night.

@Over the volcano i think you misunderstood my last post last thread. I'm not saying he's getting dumped on because his contract is an issue, but rather because we have a decision to make on him this year. People are more critical because we are expecting more if he's a guy we are keeping. Just my opinion of course on why he's taking so much crap, although he certainly has a "fan club" who has never liked him.

That's totally fair. I think there isn't much of a decision to make and that he's gone next year. If he matched last years production he'd price himself out and if he keeps struggling they'd let him walk anyway. It's never looked like he was part of the core going forward and teams in the league love guys like him. Who knows, maybe at the deadline they can flip him for someone if they're still in it, or some good picks if they're out of the hunt.

We hit on Kastelic pro scouting can't identify a similar bottom 6 forward to trade him for?

Can't resign Freddy at this rate.

But to me the problem is his center. Coyle has been awful and needs to go ASAP.

but at least with Coyle I see a player engaged, just things aren`t clicking, either way, not producing so also problematic but with Freddy, I see zero evidence he gives a rats ass about what happens on the ice

I just wish he would try to get himself involved in the game if he's not scoring. It's a Sunday skate for him. He has to know the offense isn't there and that he can make an impact in other ways, he's just flat out choosing not to.

I'm hard on the guy because I just expect more. It's the whole "I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed" type of thing.

He's shown he can play the pest.
He's shown he can draw penalties and be a physical player
He's shown he can occasionally drop the gloves.
He's shown he has a scoring touch.
He's shown he has good on ice offensive instincts.

The first 3 he can absolutely control if he's not scoring. The first 3 are 100% a choice.

They need to ship him out sooner then later. He is a free agent to be & unless he is signing real cheap not worth the effort.
