I have a "friend" here who is adamant that "On a strong playoff contending team, Konency would not be on the top 2 lines",

I believe otherwise, a major one being that Konency has lesser talent to play with in comparison to the individuals listed below.

Since I am a Flyers fan, I have an bias and wanted to see what other hockey fans thought about the aforementioned statement.

Today Konecny sits 19th in points overall and is the 10th as a winger and 6th as a RW. link

He has listed the following wingers that would be "On a strong playoff contending team" team before Konecny:

RW
Nikita Kucherov
Mikko Rantanen
Sam Reihardt
David Pasternak
Mich Marner
Matthew Tkachuk
Mark Stone
Kirill Marchenko

LW
Alex Ovechkin
Krill Kaprizov
Brady Tkachuk
Kyle Connor
Jesper Bratt
Brandon Hagel
Lucas Raymond
Artemi Panarin
Jake Guentzel
Matt Boldy

There’s a few teams with two or three better wingers than him, but I’m not sure if there’s any team with four better wingers. Like Tampa has Kucherov, Hagel and Guentzel, but he’d clearly be the fourth, and be in the top 6 unless they decided to spread the lines.

Konecny is a top 6 winger without a doubt but all of these players would play above him.

I am looking at the top 11 teams in the NHL today.

In order of standings (pick your top 5 who are contenders, and then out of those top 5 contenders which teams does he not make it on the top 2 lines?)

Jets
Caps
Stars
Panthers
Knights
Leafs
Lightning
Canes
Oilers
Wild
Avalanche

Who are your top 5 contenders in the NHL? Which teams would he not crack the top 2 lines?
Tough to pick 5 so I'll refrain. There are close to a dozen teams I could see winning the cup. I was looking at the players listed in OP and I wouldn't slot Konecny above them in a lineup. That said, he would definitely be in the top 6 of almost every team in the league, including most contenders. Maybe Toronto with Nylander and Marner on the right would be tough, but Konecny is a good enough player where he shouldn't be on anyone's 3rd line.

Konecny while a good player is a classic case of "someone has to score even on a bad team", though it seems he can play both wings which would help him in probably cracking most teams top 6, even most of the better ones.

But look at what happened to Tyler Bertuzzi in Toronto, he didn't exactly set the world on fire there, even as a left winger not directly competing with either Marner's or Nylander's spot.

Is there teams who have 4 better wingers than Konecny? Maybe 1 or 2?

He's exactly what's missing on the Sens

Tkachuk - Stutzle - Batherson
Konecny - Norris - Giroux
Greig - Pinto - Perron

He would be the best winger in Edmonton.

To answer the question: yes, he would be in the top 6 of some teams considered as contender.
Everyone of that list would be consider above him I guess.

If he plays only RW, he would not make it top6 on Leafs (Marner, Nylander) and FLA (Tkachuk, Reinhart)

Konecny is a 90 point first line winger on most teams.

Definitely better than Hagel, Raymond, Bratt, Marchenko and imo Guentzel though that one is debatable

He would definitely be a top winger on Winnipeg but he might played on the third line because of fit and chemistry. Jets roll lines and our third line usually plays as much as our second. I’d rather him on the third line then Ehlers or Perfetti

While I believe that you could at least argue TK vs. a few of the guys on that list (many are, of course, indisputably better), crucially, no team has four of them. TK is one of the top 4 wingers on any team in the NHL, and what line he's technically on is exclusively up to usage.

I feel like if your list only includes 10-15 people at a position, calling a guy a non-top-six winger simply because a team is absolutely loaded at a position is kind of a dishonest take, like when people would talk about prime Malkin as if he were a 'normal' 2C.

Even in this case it's only a 'maybe' on one - two teams in the entire league, whole argument is built around being intentionally obtuse, tell your friend to take a lap
