I know we’re winning so Green isn’t tinkering but I wish they’d just throw JBD with Sanderson. He is not cut out for that role either but at least he can sort of pass the puck.

It also feels like a good time to try out Matinpalo on the third pairing for a game or two and see what you have there.

I don’t really get the obsession with living and dying by Hamonic on that first pairing.

He's getting cratered almost every time he's on the ice. Advanced stats support that he's essentially been the worst defenseman in the league this year. Multiple times he handcuffs the team by throwing grenades up the boards which often result in sustained pressure by the other team. He is a number 7 D that is dragging down our top pairing, regardless of the recent team results.

Advanced stats supported Patrick bring our #1 Defenceman - it’s a team game

He's doing an adequate job but we really need a healthy Zub back and Hamonic to be pushed into less than 16 minutes a game for us to have sustained success. He's holding his own, but is still our worst defender on the ice and don't want to break him.

The league's stat trackers are full of shit, he definitely had a few hits and blocked shots against the Canes

No they didn’t. Just because advanced stats say some one is good does NOT mean they’re saying that that player is “the best”.

It’s like when advanced stats alledgedly said Condra was a super star first line winger. Which they never did.

He’s doing what we need him to do. Anytime you lose a top 4 guy, one of the bottom guys has to fill in as best they can until the top 4 guy is back. That’s all that’s happening here.

The other two pairings are doing well and don’t need to be mixed up.

Zub has now been out 3 and a half weeks with a fractured foot. Usually, that's a 4-6 week injury, so earliest we should expect him back is the 21st, but more likely we'd see him after the break.

When he does come back, what happens with Hamonic, he's the whipping boy around here, so I'm sure everyone would like to see him out, but Green likes him enough to play him on the top pair over JBD, so that suggests JBD will be the odd man out,

However, JBD and Kleven have been playing really well together, but in pretty sheltered mins. I suspect Hammer will take the last spot, but who knows...

Hammer will undoubtedly take the 3rd pair role, and the 3rd pair will get markedly worse.

im fully expecting JBD to sit and i would disagree with the move

that being said since we are actually winning i will give green some wiggle room. A lot easier to deal with decisions when the team is winning

Other than experience, there's nothing to justify Hamonic taking JBD's spot when Zub comes back in. Kleven-JBD are one of the best 3rd pairings in the league right now.

They are also one of the most sheltered.

Don't get me wrong, they are doing great in the mins they're given, but Green is making sure they aren't given more than they can chew.

Zub should use Ovechkin’s doctors

Just out of interest

Home and Away 5v5 min 100 minutes
Kleven Hamonic TOI 105 xGF% 46.41 HDCA/60 6.82 GF% 33.33
Kleven JBDocker TOI 215 xGF% 46.05 HDCA/60 7.25 GF% 64.29

Home > 50 minutes
Kleven Hamonic TOI 057 xGF% 46.25 HDCA/60 7.26 GF% 20
Kleven JBDocker TOI 124 xGF% 38.68 HDCA/60 7.75 GF% 55.56

Away > 40 minutes
Kleven Hamonic TOI 48 xGF% 46.63 HDCA/60 6.28 GF% 100
Kleven JBDocker TOI 91 xGF% 54.97 HDCA/60 6.57 GF% 80

Not sure how to rank 3rd pairs. By xGF% Hamonic Kleven Away is better than Josi and Carrier for example so not sure I go by that alone. Maybe Gil has a model he'd like to share with Green when he pulls JBD out when Zub comes back.

Maybe Hamonic will look better in sheltered minutes. I still see teams skating and moving the puck towards him, and him being serviceable isn't going to last for 82 games.

Was nice to see him actually get the puck on net last night, thought that was one of his better aspects last season
