Senators put so much pressure with their speed and transition that they can feast on PP time or just hope for lucky bounces.
If they beat Tampa Bay next week, Senators are pretty set in stone for the top 3 in Atlantic. The important thing is not allowing any goals. Eventually the offence will blossom, right around playoff time...

As great as their recent scoring has been, of their 11 goals in the last 2 games, only 2 were ES (both against Wild). The other 9 goals were 5 PP, 3 SH, 1 OT. There are a lot fewer penalties in the playoffs and the likelihood of getting shorties will be limited. Hopefully, the increase in special team scoring gives the players more confidence and leads to more ES scoring.

I was looking at Team Stats on MoneyPuck and it was pretty interesting.

We are bottom 5 in High danger and Medium danger shots for. We are bottom 5 in rebound shots for as well.

Then we are top 10 in low danger shots for.

We take a lot of shots but not from prime scoring areas. Our shooting % at 5 on 5 for shots on goal is 6.96% which is good for 31st. For comparison CBJ is at 10.02% which is a massive difference.

Just looking at these stats it looks like we could be much better offensively by tweaking a few things. Getting guys in front of the net, getting more shots from the slot, and being first on rebounds. I think our offensive game will round out. We just need to be a bit more truculent in the Ozone. We need to move the puck around quicker and make the other team get out of position.

IMO the transition to this improved style of play began under Martin last year. Green seems to be following up and getting the team to buy in hard to playing better 200 foot hockey. He's a Jack Adams finalist if the season ended today.

Yes, Martin wasn't shy to call the guys out and let everyone know they needed to decide to play the right way and stop cheating.

Staois set the tone with that switch and I like to hear that Green basically told the group it was on them, not on the coaches. They could either play a winning style or they could remain a joke.

The ES goal scoring must be improved. The new strategy of activating the D to support the ES attack seems to be the approach being taken now to address that. The addition of a top 4 F (a centre to replace Norris or W) would help too.

Staios was a "rookie" GM in the NHL and Green was not "unknown" as had coached elsewhere without much success.

However, yes, it is good to see positive results with the team in a playoff position at this time instead of in the bottom of the standings and talking about the draft and draft position we will get (Tankathon).
 
It's interesting to look at Tankathon and see the relatively large quantity of draft picks that have been traded by teams currently in playoff positions.
 
I felt confident with Green that he was the guy Staios wanted and he went out and got him. Not just dictated by salary first like it seemed under Melnyk. Maybe it appeared like another cheap hire to some, but I felt like the process behind it was probably very different to the previous regime, not to mention just a different, more qualified guy making the final decision.

Still every team below us in rebound chances have scored more goals than us 5on5. Likewise in terms of high danger shots, Minnesota, Buffalo, Vancouver, and Detroit are well worse than us and have all scored far more goals than us. Is it entirely personnel, bad luck, a bit of both, or systems? Buffalo and Seattle are some of the best teams in converting chances despite being putrid in generating. Likewise both are bottom 10 teams.

Sure, he was factually a rookie. But "rookie" was being used as a pejorative, repeated ad nausem. Rather than assess moves on merit, lets just dismiss them based on his experience. Looks foolish in hindsight, well, I should say even more foolish.

When I say unknown, I just mean someone who hasn't yet proven themselves. The real issue is that people thought they knew what Green was as a coach, the reality is they did not. Green had neither proven himself to be a good, or bad coach. It was fine to prefer someone with more experience, or to be disappointed with the choice, but some were writing it off as a terrible hire, based on their own wealth of experience in elite coaching, and direct exposure to Green's methodologies, I'm sure...

Green has been coaching for quite a while, I doubt he needs lessons from anyone on how to coach this team. This is a copycat league after all & most teams play a similar style & the difference always seems to come down to the players & their commitment to defence & playing the right way.

IMO it was clear that we have plenty of talent & it was just a matter of time before these guys started to put it all together & it was their commitment to defence & reducing the goals against that has made a huge difference. Also getting very good goaltending something we haven't had in quite some time, although injuries to goalies & key players is still happening. Like every team it's not perfect all the time, but they have tweaked the team enough to show improved progress & are firmly in a playoff spot.

The results have been good but I have the same thoughts that I had with DJ, pushing everyone to play like a third line grinder in the playoffs is going to cause many injuries and most guys cant play like that, look how many guys get broken in the playoffs. doing it for 82 games is crazy.
They need to win with some skill once and a while not just taking the pain route every game
 
Green’s desire to win from behind the bench is maybe the highest burn we’ve ever had as a Sens coach and matched the teams will perfectly.

Staois, Poulin, Alfie also don’t have Cups and all these guys played with a burning desire to win. Underrated how badly our management and coaching want to win and have their names on the Cup

It's been that way legitimately since he arrived in 2022, and he somehow earned a 2 year NMC deal

I'll be surprised if he's taken out, though anyone watching sees that any pair he is on immediately become not just worse, but significantly so.

Did DJ Smith need any lessons? Was DJ worthy of criticism?

108 player responses naming 28 coaches, notably including a single vote for DJ Smith.
Notably concerning Ottawa, not a single vote for Travis Green.
