Max Pacioretty might not be a bad idea. Super unfortunate brutal injuries. He was solid for the caps last season.

A super cheap 1yr deal might turn out to be a low-risk high-value contract.

I honestly think it would be a good idea. He's a very good vet that can probably give you 20 goals if healthy. I believe he's also eligible for bonuses in his contract.

Pass... I'm not sure we need another non-physical, winger, who is weak defensively, prone to turnovers. He's 27 now, and still hasn't cleaned up his game, and been demoted from a C, to a winger, due to the deficiencies in his game.
He's a crappier version of Domi basically. Domi at least makes up for his deficiencies with other aspects of his game.

Yeah and he also has size and some snarl to his game that i can see Tre liking. Should be able to grab for super cheap potentially

He also has another off-season to fully recover

I like this idea a lot tbh. Probably only guy besides Sprong I may have some interest in now that Tank is off the market.

I think depth scoring is going to be problematic this year

I’m good with Patches …

With the composition of the top 9, the Leafs need more size with scoring than smaller playmakers. Patches fits the bill, so does Zadina, and JVR.

Sprong and Roslovic aren’t bad but at the same time I’m not sure they fit the need

Zadina just sucks at hockey unfortunately despite his natural talents, JVR needs a ridiculous amount of sheltering and is basically a PP specialist

Agreed on all accounts except JVR. Dude may be big but is super vanilla.

Rather take a swing at Patches for cheap

I went through the list of UFA's still available... looking for a legit C... and couldn't really find anyone who I'd find attractive as a depth C. Maybe Chris Tierney on a league minimum... someone we could sneak down to the Marlies, but would be effective depth callup?

Interesting that Tre conservatively signed 1 year deals on some bounce back types like Domi, Bert, and Klingberg

Yet this year he’s gone opposite and thrown term out the window.
He was on the job like a week, which explains it for me. With a year under his belt, he’s in a much better position to make bigger bets.

The D and goaltending look like they've improved

2 big holes in the top 9 remaining though. Need more offensive firepower and likely a proper 3C. Probably only one is filled though.

Tres going to have to do more than just inquire about guys and pull the trigger on a trade

Need a hockey trade

Colton for Jarnkrok + Robertson could work.

McMann-Tavares-Nylander

while our Defense and Goaltending might have improved those are still the weakness of our team. we already have an elite offense. that can't score in the playoffs but you can't just keep adding. like we were 3 goals last year behind Colorado the best offensive team in the league we can't expect to make it much better we wont outscore the rest of the league by 30-40 goals

so it's either the drivers who don't work under the pressure of the playoffs or there trying to hard to cover for our deficiencies we've had in the past on the Blueline and in Goal that has caused them to not produce in the playoffs. we don't need to add offense. it's the type of offense that probably needs changing. and that's not going to change with the core 4 here no matter who you bring in because those guys drive the play for us.

Forward addition will have to be a trade. I don't see anyone out there that is better on the wing that what we have internally. It's too bad we didn't push harder to sign Tsyplakov

I'd disagree in that the bottom six needs more goals, and the core aren't able to drive play when they're not on the ice unless they drop JT to the 3rd line.

I get there's a case to break yup the core but until that happens they'll need to adjust as they can.

But why does Colorado do that? They seem to have just MacKinnon, Middlestadt and Colton as C's right now....So they would have just two C's and trade for more wingers??

Who has a surplus of C's?

Colorado also struggled with C depth after the departure of Naz and trading Newhook away as well, they had to give up Byram to fill the 2C hole with Mittelstadt, so yeah I imagine they want to keep that a position of strength now.

Honestly we need a 2C, Tavares really should be playing 3C. Would slot Holmberg or Domi in 2C, dump Kampf+Jarnkrok (4.5M) OUT and sign/trade for a winger

Knies-Matthews-XXX
Holmberg*-Domi-Marner (replace Bert with Holmberg basically same line as against Boston when matthews was out)
McMann-Tavares-Nylander
XXX-Dewar-Reaves

*If Robertson re-signs then dump Holmberg to 4th line and put Robertson on 2nd line on the LW

play the top 3 lines about the same minutes 5 on 5 and then PP will round out the minutes

Issue then becomes is that wehave forwards who can potentially score but don't have many who can PK. The XXX should be a forward that can PK too and play in top9. No other option
