Looked like he was about to break out in the playoffs last year but he's been MEH this year. I'd be interested depending on the cost but I doubt Rangers are looking to move him.

I’d be intrigued by Evans and Tanev.

Going into next year with a 4th line of Tanev - Evans - Lorentz would be nice imo.

However I do hate trading assets for a 4th liner

Well his name was thrown into rumours during the Miller saga. I’ve also seen rumours around a Lafreniere for Zegras move so it sounds like for the right price the Rangers are willing to move him.

Brayden for Kampf, Robertson, Niemela and a 2nd. That might not be enough but I don't see why would go any higher than that.

I would trade Timmins and a 4th for Luke.

Brayden makes a lot of money and has term left. He is not a rental and that could even hurt his value given he is on the decline. He fits here for the right price though.

Luke makes a lot and is also on the decline. He fits here and with Mo.

We may gain extra value by having both brothers here though.

Yes I would go after Lafreniere at the cost of Cowan and probably enthusiastically. We would be foregoing the Cowboy's ELC years but I think Lafreniere has the higher pedigree still and higher upside and would be a great compliment to Matthew Knies for our mini youth movement behind the current core.

Think about this from an expectations perspective. Do you want to spend 1st overall pick and it turns out to be Alexis Lafreniere? Absolutely not.

Compare Lafreniere to Knies. Last year he was the same age as Knies is now. He scored 28 goals and 57 points last year. Knies is on pace for 32 goals and 56 goals this season and the idea of paying him $7 million per on a long term deal isn't outrageous. The difference here is Knies wasn't a first overall pick and his progression has been on an upward trajectory. To have a Knies, Lafreniere 2 pack behind Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Tavares with big upside years ahead and the ability to play a heavier game would be welcome.

Adding a left winger @ 7M per doesn't solve the biggest holes in the lineup unless they are also trading Knies for a center or RD so kind of moving deck chairs. A team with no top 4 wingers would be all over him but he isn't a fit in TO. Also the Rags have a bunch of good players in their prime so I expect they would have no interest in prospects.

A Knies Lafreniere 2 pack down the lineup with some mix and match size and sandpaper is a nice look for the team moving forward.

He’s 21 and could be a 40 goal power forward who has delivered big moments in the playoffs already

It will take a long time to find a guy like him

A top pair dman can be acquired in other ways - trading a 1st or top prospect in a package

The guy's been in the league for 5 years now, I think at some point the #2 draft pick pedigree ceases to matter. He's still young and good but at 7m for a winger I'm not sure you're getting much surplus value with his production as you would with Cowan's ELC.

If we're bringing in another high-paid forward on a long-term deal, I'd much rather we spend the money on Bennet in UFA.

Using our limited assets and cap space into another winger, one that has struggled with consistency at that, would be quite the decision.

Why are we taking on term and giving up assets for two players we know are on the decline?

How does that make us better in the next few years?

No more wasted assets on declining players. If you are giving up assets you are trading them for players that fit the future of this team.

We are not a win now team and acting like we are is disconnected from reality.

We are a good team and we need to continue getting better with smart moves and not for names who are going to get worse here, take our prospects and decline in front of our eyes.

Here's the issue, why would NYR do this?

Cowan is a pretty good prospect, but likely not enough for Laf even still.
 
A Schmaltz + Bjugstad deal where we move Domi, whether that’s to Utah or a third team, would be a fantastic move by the Leafs.

I’d also look into a move around Robertson for Krebs.

Ship Pacioretty to Detroit for future considerations.

McMann - Tavares - Marner
Jarnkrok - Krebs - Nylander
Lorentz - Bjugstad - Steeves

Well, I would argue that we are a win-now team, as in we have a three or four year window opening now. So, if we don't agree on that we won't agree on what moves we should make.

Almost every rental or TDL with term s a player in decline. That's how this works. Having Brayden decline to being a decent 3C with intangibles might work out well on a team that has five or six other 20+ goal scorers. Luke can decline here also if he gives Mo a partner.

My point, however, was that I would not overpay for them. What actual assets are we giving up in these proposals? Robertson? Niemela? 2nd? 4th? We also move out Kampf.

Our window is opening now, but is not only now. I am not interested in moving firsts, Cowan, Minten, Danford, AA, Hildeby, or Grebyenkin for rentals.
