Matthews to the Rangers for Trochek, Lafrenerie, Cuyle and Schneider. 😛
Would be an interesting looking Leafs team.

The Trade
Famously known as “The Trade,” Gretzky was packaged with Marty McSorley and Mike Krushelnyski in exchange for Jimmy Carson, Martin Gelinas, a 1989 1st-round pick, a 1991 1st-round pick, a 1993 1st-round pick, and $15 million cash, and this is not even the worst Gretzky trade.

They have the trade tree, interesting read and it's impact on the expansion Golden Knights.

I don’t know if it’s already been discussed here, and I don’t know if it’s true or not, but a friend told me this evening that apparently Friedman has been talking about the potential scenario of Carolina dealing Rantanen before the deadline and while it may have been speculative (I have no idea) allegedly he linked the Leafs to that discussion (among other teams).

Now, that sounds pretty crazy and just in no way at all likely unless they think Marner is for sure going to walk.

But one thing I found interesting is with Chicago having eaten 50% or Ratanens cap this year, and Carolina in position where they could do the same, Ratanen acquired at the deadline would only cost $2.3M which is pretty insane for whoever were to potentially add him.

The cost would be insane though

Whatever price they ask, I'd seriously consider it

1st + Cowan + another piece will easily be the asking price for him as a rental if we're considering the Giroux package

Sounds like a deal the VGK would do.

We've hear Rantanen wants around $12mm.

Columbus has a tonne of Cap Space.

Or something like Ryan O'Reilly and Preds have 3 * 1st. rounders this year.
'Canes gave up Necas, who they were apparently shopping in the summer, and Drury a 3rd. liner?

He had a good 4 Nations, and is a very good player, but I'd like to see how the playoffs works out for us first.
Way I see it is there is a high bar for Marner and the team to pass (together). The tourny doesn't change that, but does make it seem more possible today than before.

Depth, defence, goaltending, need to lock down tight playoff play to ballast the stars. The stars need to bring wave after wave of offence (three lines?), and definitively overwhelm the opposition over seven games, to an ECF or better.

It has to be abundantly clear that it works, otherwise Marner walks. Doing nothing, making excuses, keeping the faith, isn't how you go from losing to winning - the 'ol college try has been spent. Risk and action is required, as always.
